and picking up the knitting needles!!!

My son and daughter-in-law just announced that they are making me a grandmother next July.   bear_wub  I'm half-way through the first baby sweater and planning for lots more .. plus of course all the layette sewing. I've waiting so long for this with my biological clock just ticking away!
bear_rolleyes  I did buy one child-proof teddy on the weekend for them and can't wait til the baby is old enough to appreciate artist bears!

I just visited our friendly neighbourhood wool shop for more ideas and got a lovely pattern for an knitted then felted artist bear so all is not lost!
I must say I'm also biased against the Canadian/American baby patterns out there - so boring. Fortunately I still have my Phildar books from 35 years ago and the new Norwegian books are outstanding. I also got a new British Sirdar pattern.
There goes my mohair budget but fortunately I've already placed my Christmas order for Schulte!

How exciting!  But I do hope you're not putting the mohair away from long.  Little ones like bears, too!  Now it's just time to learn how to make them child-safe, right?

Toby, if you can cast on, knit and purl then you have the basics. All you need now is a good pattern and if you visit a wool shop they can steer you to a 'starter' pattern and I'm sure give you tips. I know there are many patterns that are basically just squares knit together, no real shaping at all.
Go for it!

Marion,
CONGRATULATIONS!  I still remember the feeling we had when we found out we were going to be grandparents.  It's thrilling and I couldn't be happier for you.  Have fun knitting!

Congratulations Marion- you will love being a grandmother!!! When in July is the baby due? My daughter is also expecting her first baby in July ( 7th which is actually the baby's fathers birthday). This daughter has had three miscarriages and one chemical pregnancy so we are all holding our breath until she gets past the 3 month stage She is also 39 at Xmas so her clock is ticking. She did not get married until she was 36 hence the lateness of trying to become parents. I also have a son and he has two darling daughters who are 5 and 7
The best part about being grandparents is you can really enjoy them without the responsibility  and of course they also go home
Enjoy every minute of the waiting and watch out for carpal tunnel syndrome in your wrists which might happen if you knit constantly

Gail..they are expecting July 7 as well!
They also intend to find out what type of baby so pretty soon I'll be able to knit and sew in the right colours  I've waiting so long for this - my daughters are already in their mid 30's and there is no sign that they intend to produce grandchildren for me and this son is going to be 30 in March! Why do they wait so long these days! I should have teenage grandchildren by now. bear_rolleyes

My dad said if he'd known grandchildren were so much fun he'd have had them first instead of the 14 kids he had!!

Toby, I said the same thing to my MIL and she replied that I wouldn't have appreciated them unless I'd gone through my own kids first. So true!

best part about being grandparents is you can really enjoy them without the responsibility

Actually Gail, you know that life's not all rosey: we've found in several instances that grandparents have all of the responsibility but no Authority! That's even more scary!
