I sprained my ankle! How retched is that? I was in Wisconsin getting ready to drive back to Minnesota and I misjudged the step and fell. I thought I broke something. My aunt and uncle were so upset and my foot was already swelling and... oh it was awful. I down played the pain so they would not feel bad. I drove 5 hours home. I took my shoe off (hard to pry off my foot) and saw the swelling and huge bruising all on the side of my foot and ankle. I can barely walk.

The up side to all of this is no exercise for a couple of weeks. O.K. maybe a month. No, two months... maybe three months to be safe...what do you guys think. Six months safe enough?....

I'm sorry about your sprained ankle...they can be sooo painful that I think a break of at least 6 months would be necessary

That said I hope your ankle heals quickly.

Michelle, so sorry you had an accident.  I've never broken anything, but I've heard that actually hurts less. Make sure to see a doctor though. I once thought I sprained an ankle, but it turned out that I had torn tow of the three ligaments in it. I had to have surgery, but nowadays I think they just give you special stabilizing shoes and it heals on its own. Very painful when it happened though and I always think putting ice on swellings doubles the pain. Hope it heals quickly for you.

MIchelle

I fell and "sprained" my ankle in September. Because I of the way my ankle went over I did fat more damage than I thought. Six weeks later when it should have been nearly healed it suddenly gave way and I found out that I had completely ruptured the ligaments this time around. So please even thjough it may seem silly for just a sprain go and see a doctor and explain in detail which way the ankle went. If you went toe down rather than over on the side you can do a lot of damage that will not heal properly. This is what happned to me and I am now hours and hours out going to phyios and still looking at surgery and hitting on thousands of dollars of bills.

They have all assured me that there is nothing simply in a sprain as too many bones can come out and do heaps of soft tissue damge in the ankle...........everyone of the Dr's have told me I should have seen someone and explained exactly which way the ankle turned

Son't end up like me walking around in a brace......it's darn unconfortable!!!!!

Pleas please see a Dr.............

Should have put ice on it immediately, my dear!!! Tsk, tsk! Even stopped at a grocery store and bought a bag of frozen corn or peas! And all those hours without it elevated!  I'd say a year of no exercise at least!

Seriously though, everyone is right... if you haven't already, do see a doctor!!!

Hope it heals quick!!! Be careful!

I am like Danni... I THINK A YEAR !!!! But really , you will be the best judge. When it does not hurt any more ...then resume exercises. I am so sorry to hear about the pain , I will pray for you. Better make sure it is not broken. If it stays swelled long have it xrayed to be sure. GOD Bless.

Put some arnica on it to help with the bruising.  Make sure you have not broken it or torn anything.  Then just keep putting the arinca on it and you will feel better.  But you should still avoid any exercise for at least six months to a year.  The only exercise that is exceptable is that which is required to make bears.

Michelle, OH you poor girl.......and what a trooper to drive home, I hope you did what basketball player's do. Put it in a bucket of ice.  Hang in there, Pam Sandra those physio(we call them pt's) folks are great. I think they know more about the body than the docs sometimes!

Dear Teddy Bear Friends: thanks to all of you for the sympathy, prayers and advice. I see the doctor next week. I of course will not dare to attempt exercise (not that it is a hardship for me for I always feel hot, tired, sweaty and hungry after a work out- actually I detest anything physical. I'm forced to do it under doctors orders for bone density issues). So for all of you who agree a year off my feet, I whole heartedly agree....Maybe two years to be safe (just kidding--I think).

Well, maybe you could do upper torso exercises in the meantime...  bear_whistle

 Sorry, I couldn't resist  bear_laugh   I've been there, done that and got the shirt!   bear_thumb RICE....Rest, Ice, and Elevation of the afflicted limb above the heartlevel.  Everytime that you have the sprained ankle below your heartlevel, the swelling will set in again.  And no matter how careful you think you are, you'll keep reinjuring it.  Sooooo each time you have to struggle to the bathroom, struggle to go to the front door, struggle over to the couch...each and everytime you'll be retweeking those injured tendons and muscles that support the ankle.   Sooo drag along a little baggie of frozen peas or corn and put your ankle up and pop the frozen veg around it.  I've found over the years the veg works better than the ice because they're smaller and conforms to the shape of your ankle far better than ice.

Nurses remind me, how long is it on for ice??  If I remember correctly, it was ice 10 minutes, then take the icing off for at least a minute or two before repeating.  Seems silly, but yes, you can actually frostbite the skin if you just slap on the icebag and leave it.

I've been told that the sprains are a far worse injury than a clean break, and they take MUCH longer to heal.  Patience will be key, and seeing your doc will be a big help  bear_thumb

You have my sympathies    Sending along fast healing vibes

Debbie: I may try the frozen peas or corn idea. That may work. I have ice cube wrapped in a towel and that is cumbersome.

Bronwen: you are so right about sprains being annoying. I am elevating my foot. It is black and blue spanning the entire foot and ankle. Don't know why the whole foot is like that....strange.... The swelling is goes up and down depending if I am standing or not (though I try not to stand).

Thank you all for the advice and concern....

Ohhh, so sorry to hear this! Are you sure you didn't break something? I hope you get an x-ray when you see your doctor.
I sprained my ankle when I was young, ruptured some ligaments and it wasn't treated correctly or soon enough. It never healed properly and hindered me in a lot of ways for years. It's better now, but still flares up when I over use it. I bring this up only to emphasize how imprtant it is to get proper treatment.

Please take care of yourself and I hope everything heals up quickly and completely!

Hi Michelle

When I tore my ligaments my toes went black and my physio showed me on a model how it is a really long ligement and goes from the calf muscle to the toes.......so when you damage anything in the area the blood etc can go all the way from A to B thus more swelling and bruising etc.  Also why you can do so much damage to the soft tissue. I know all about ankles now after my little effort.......it hurst like %*%^& and is more annoying that anything and you really miss that independence of movement and boy does your memory suddenly become good because the extra effort when you forget things is just NOT worth it!!!!!!

Hang in there it will get better every day.......hopefully not the months mine has taken. bear_thumb  bear_thumb

Dear Sandra and Bonnie: thank you for the advice. I am seeing my doctor on Wed. I wonder why the whole foot is black and blue. I mean everything up to the ankle. Plus it really hurts but I am walking better on it.  I have been icing it, elevating it and taking ibuprofen.
