I received this from an environmentally conscious friend in an email this afternoon - thought I'd do my part as requested and pass it along:

The 1st of February 2007:

Participate in the biggest mobilization of Citizens Against Global Warming!

The Alliance for the Planet [a group of environmental associations] is calling on all citizens to create 5 minutes of electrical rest for the planet. http://www.lalliance.fr

People all over the world should turn off their lights and electrical appliances on the first of February 2007, between 1.55 pm and 2.00 pm in New York, 18.55 for London, and 19.55 for Paris, Bruxelles, and Italy. 1.55pm in Ottawa, 10.55am on the Pacific Coast of North America.

This is not just about saving 5 minutes worth of electricity; this is about getting the attention of the media, politicians, and ourselves.

Five minutes of electrical down time for the planet: this does not take long, and costs nothing, and will show all political leaders that global warming is an issue that needs to come first and foremost in political debate.

Why February 1? This is the day when the new UN report on global climate change will come out in Paris.

This event affects us all, involves us all, and provides an occasion to show how important an issue global warming is to us. If we all participate, this action can have real media and political weight.

Please circulate this call to your utmost ability to your network.

Hi Brenda,  bear_flower
I would welcome the five minutes of being "unplugged" myself.  I can do this!  I've already read the headlines this morning.  Now maybe people will start to take notice.

Warmest bear hugs,

Guess we have been doing our part starting almost 8 years ago, when we bought our property & decided we didn't want to be hooked up to the electric grid...we produce our power from the wind & sun!

Hugs &

I'm up for it  bear_original ..in just a few minutes actually.  I've already unplugged the alarm clocks (hub's gonna love resetting them bear_tongue ) and stopped the ceiling fans..just need to shut down the PC.  I wonder if they'll see a reportable difference on grids somewhere......

Absolutey, every bit counts, Chloe!

Aleta, we will be definitely unplugged for those five minutes, and I for one will enjoy it!  My newspaper and tea are raleady for a nice break.

My sister and her hubby are very environmentally conscious - Dan gets upset every time he sees a manacured lawn as he says it's so wasteful to spend millions growing perfect grass, only to cut it and throw it away, when half the world is starving!  It's one of his pet peeves.  He was taught landscape architechture at Lousiiana State University for years, and now they live in rural Nova Scotia and are involved with many environmental committees.  They really want to build a straw bale house, and then teach courses on sustainable living.   Anyway, something has to get the  attention of the politicians.

Charlotte, we have a few friends off the grid and it is really neat.  I wish more of us had the determination to do what you have accomplished.  Good for you.

Chrissi, I hope they do - if enough of us do it, it has to show up somewhere.

                                     hugs,

                                     Brenda

Our freezer and  water pump are solar powered, the house is concrete-therefore all heating and cooling costs are minimal-about $30 in the summer for airconditioning.  And the winter?  Well we use wood, already down wood which is easy enough since this is a forest.

Three years ago rick said gas was going to $3.00 a gallon....and got us a used GEO that gets 49-50 miles to the gallon when He
drives....when i drove it didn't do as good... lead foot
Gas is still $2.79 here in this part of Oregon-sheesh

And we cycle the inside Fridge/freezer so that the electricity it uses is during the slowest time of day-

And I have a treadle Singer......

So I don't see a problem being unplugged-in the winter we frequently are anyway because of rain and snow.....

good luck to all of you in the Carolinas and Georgia and Virginia-your storm looks like a doozy

So the unplugged is today-better go then
