This guy found us this morning. He just showed up here suddenly. I have never seen him around, and he seems to think this should be his home. He is a wonderful dog. I think he is St. Bernard/Lab. He is a very big guy, he stands 36" at the shoulder. He is too thin, but not starving. We feel that he probably was dumped here. If he is not claimed, he will either stay here or go to my son's house. His name for the time is Bart.
To give you an idea of how big this dog is I have added a picture of Bart standing next to Rudy. Rudy is a 100 lb. lab/boxer mix. He's a big dog, but Bart dwarfs Rudy.
Millie you seem to have that "neon sign" too!! My hub and I joke that we have a flashing neon sign over our house that only the animals can see! "Come One and All"
Typically it's lost dogs, cats, etc. This summer we've had more "wildlife" rescues than I can count....birds, rabbits, squirrels, a toad...you name it we've had to save and relocate! The animals know you will be sure to care for them and help them find their way   (Man lost all of his gifts in Eden, not the animals...they're still just as smart and "intune" as God made them.)
Bart knew where he was going. He's really a beautiful dog, look at that "smile"

PS....could he be a thin Newfoundland mix? He has that look about him.
Yes, I have a sign. This has been the year for cats more than anything. But we have also taken in chickens and a duck, and now possibly Bart.
I guess he could be a Newfoundland mix. He definitely does not have all of the hair of a Newfoundland. He also needs to put on several pounds. Whatever he is, it seems to be a wonderful combo. He is an unneutered male, and he has not even so much growled at my other male dogs. He just wants to play and eat, eat and play. Then a small nap is in order.
Bart's a really pretty boy, Millie. He has nice white teeth, too. He's found a wonderful new home, at any rate.
I don't know about the rest of the country, but the mortgage crisis in Southern California has greatly increased the number of homeless animals. Some are just left to fend for themselves on the streets. Whatever this guy's history is, he's home now.
He certainly has a Newfie look to him. One of our favourite dogs was a Newf female who passed away at the advanced age of 13. Great dogs!

How could you resist that adorable face....
Ooooh, I know about the neon sign, too . . . mine says " strays welcome here - these people are suckers for animals of any kind". I noticed the white teeth, also, Marlys - think he must be pretty young. Bart is a lucky pup.
SueAnn,
I agree - I don't think he's too old and I also think he could be a Newfie cross. They do have a certain look to them, but whatever he is, he's beautiful. Those eyes say "pretty please, can I stay?" I know the economy is hurting but how can anyone just dump an animal, never knowing what will become of them? I makes me heartsick.
Millie,
Thank goodness for your kind heart! Keep us posted on Bart.
hugs,
Brenda
The first thing I noticed about the picture was his pleasant, sweet face. Then I saw the beautiful white marking on his chest in the form of a big white bird with wings outstretched. Isn't the crane or white heron an omen of good luck in China or Japan? Hugs, Jan
He is a gorgeous boy and he will be such a lucky dog if his new home is with you.
Oh, What a beautiful dog - he is so lucky to have wandered into your home and thank heavens he is no longer roaming around on his own.
It's so sad to hear of people in California leaving their dogs and pets because of the mortgages crisis and I hope this is not the reason in this little dogs case. I think any pet I had would be the last thing I would cling on to under such circumstances. Luckily there are wonderful people like you who would help a poor homeless pet. Nice to hear of a happy ending and have fun with your new friend!
Hugs

He is a lovely dog

I was speaking to a man in town yesterday and he said that while he was out baling hay near here he seen someone dump a big black dog. He was not able to get the license number of the vehicle, but most likely that is where Bart came from. I did offer him to my son, but now I just can't let him go. He has bonded with me and with Wynnstan so quickly. Looking at him this morning, I am wondering if he could be Newfoundland and Great Dane. He is just so tall. When he stands next to my dining room table, his back is taller than the table.
good for you...and especially for him! Now for a little snip snip visit to the vet and everyone will live happily everafter.

I noticed the white markings on his chest, but did not see the crane/white heron until Jan mentioned it. Whatever his mix, he is a beautiful boy and lucky to have found you. Something meant to be it appears and seems like you've already decided he's your boy.
aww, Bart is a lovely looking dog. Good luck with him!

Oh Millie: what a sweet dog!! You are very kind hearted to keep him. There should be more people in this world like you!!
Bart is so lucky to have found you. He looks like a beautiful dog and you are such a good hearted lady to keep him!
Bart is a cutie, big cutie! I think he wants a forever home with you!
What a BIG, gorgeous boy!!! He certainly looks like he's home now.......shame on the people that dumped him. That kind of thing makes me so mad!
We get our share of 'strays' that way too, though it's usually cats. Anyway, I am so glad he made his way to you. This was meant to be!
Holy Cow! He is a big pup standing next to your Rudy. He does look more Newfie in the altogether and he's a whole bunch of adorable.
awww what a gorgeous boy Bart is, I could not resist his eyes either - he has clearly found his new home where he knows he will be loved

Oh wow! That white shape on his chest reminded me of the mythical bird "Phoenix rising from the ashes". Here is the picture I was thinking of:
What a beautiful dog Bart is and makes you wonder why anyone could abandon such a lovely boy.
Yes, the picture of the phoenix rising Sue Ann, is a lot like the markings on Bart.
Good luck with the dog and looks like he is fitting into the family well.
Hugs
Carolyn
He really is gorgeous.............and good on ya for taking him in - tho' it sounds like there wasn't ANY doubt!
When we lived in France, just across the border from Geneva, we also had the "neon sign" - this one just for cats.
we collected one new cat per year - all of them appearing with one thought in mind - "this is nice, think I'll stay".
I will never forget our next move - a ten-hour car journey to Holland, with six cats, a Leonberger and an Irish Wolfhound............real travelling circus!
huggies (and a special one for Bart)
