David & I had just spent a nice weekend away. We went to Pennsylvania for our STAR motorcycle club President's meeting. While he went to the meeting, I went to the mall and wandered. On Sunday, we started back home, but had to spend the night in Syracuse, because he had a training for work on Monday. While he was in his training, I hit the mall again. He got out of the training an hour later than planned. On the way home to the North Clountry, we stopped for a nice Red Lobster restaurant dinner. As we were getting closer to home, we had to stop and pick Ti up from the kennel where he spent the weekend. David was driving, I had Ms Garmin in my lap, and started to close my eyes (it was about 7:30 PM) David said something and my eyes flew open to see the deer standing on the side of the road....before anything could be said, off went the deer, right into the front right side of my van, wiping out the headlight and jamming the door. Poor deer rolled over and over and over....then he got up and ran away. I called 911, the first time I have ever had to call them....actually, the very first car accident (with damage) I have been in. We are both fine, and once the cops took the report, we continued on, picked up Ti and made it home without more incident.

Today I need to call the insurance company and a repair shop. A nice weekend, too bad it had to end this way....Anyway, I am home and look forward to going to my local Wal-Mart to buy the things I could not find in the big malls!!!!!!!!

Glad to live where there are lots of deer..................

Wow that is a bit scary.  I used to live in PA I know there are many deer in the NE part of the country.  I have seen plenty driving, but never hit one.  I am glad you are ok.

wow, Ellen, you can still say that after this incident! That is the one thing I HATE about living where there are so many deer! I don't even like to go out after dark as it is just too easy to hit them - so far we have only hit one and that was even before dusk so we saw him in time to stop with just a small bump but it still threw the deer up onto the hood - straight at me in the passenger seat! - and then he slid down the side into the ditch and was gone by the time we got out of the car. No damage to the car and he didn't appear to be hurt but I was sure plenty shook up!

Yikes, glad everyone came out of it okay.  I hate the twisty windy roads up north where the deer appear out of the undergrowth without you having any warning.  Tests your emergency braking skills anyway!

  Oh how scary!  Your adrenaline must have been spiking!  We live where there are lots of deer, but there don't seem to be as many accidents with them as with the moose.  We've been fortunate and haven't hit any... so far!

I'm glad you and your husband are fine and that the deer may be fine as well.  That must have really shaken you up.  Big hugs!

Well, let's see, it was dark, but we did see the deer. He was just standing there, looking across the road. But, something told me he was going to go.....and he did, unfortunatly into the car. Oh, the road at that point was actually straight for a couple of miles.....

Yes, Edie, I still love living up here, even with the deer. After spending the weekend with nothing but cars and traffic and people, I will stick with the woods.....

Filed the insurance claim, waiting for the repair shop now................

Glad to hear you are ok after the trauma Ellen!  I was visiting my friends in  Maine a few years ago and a deer ran out in front of us- first thing we saw  of it, it was in the middle of the road, I was sure it was going to land in our laps!  The deer in that case was not so lucky, sadly bear_sad
Such a scary experience for you

My brother once hit two deer in the exact same spot within the same week.

It was the night before Thanksgiving, right in the middle of the rutting season.  He was on the way home from work, late at night, when the deer ran out in front of him.  There was no way to avoid it.  The deer died instantly and the entire front end of his car was smashed.  We called the game warden and the insurance company.  All the paperwork was done and the car went into the shop the following Monday.  He got a rental car while his car was being worked on.

It was the following Friday, the auto body shop called and told him his car was ready.  He was on his way home from work, driving the rental car.  Then he was going to return the rental and we would go pick up his car.  It was the exact same spot where another deer ran out and he smacked into it with the rental car!  Luckily, insurance covered the rental while his car was in the shop.

From this experience, I can tell you that insurance companies can not hold you at fault, surcharge you or drop your coverage for damage caused by deer or animals in the road unless it can be proved that it was willful or that you were grossly negligent.  If you tried to hit the deer or they can show that you were driving so fast that an accident was inevitable they can charge you.  But if you are driving down the road in the normal way, the law says that they can not hold it against you.

At least that's how it is in Pennsylvania.  I'm sure most states have similar rules.

If it is possible, you should pick up the deer and take the meat.  It's too bad that the deer had to die but it's also a shame to waste the meat.  That's why we called the game warden.  If the warden inspects the deer and gives the okay, you can butcher the deer.  (The warden needs to check the carcass to be sure you weren't poaching.)  Even if you don't eat game I'm sure there is somebody who will.  Even if your family or friends don't eat it you could eat least donate it to a food bank, a homeless shelter or a church.  Like I said, I feel bad that the deer was killed by a car like that but, if somebody eats the meat, some good can come out of it.

Besides, venison is often much better for you than most commercially produced meat.  There's a lot less fat in it and wild deer eat what animals SHOULD eat instead of chemically enhanced feeds with antibiotics and junk.  If it's prepared and cooked correctly it is perfectly safe to eat and the taste isn't really much different than meat that you eat every day.

fortunately, the deer we hit lived...ran off into the woods. Had the estimate done on the car, getting a second one tomorrow.....for a 2005 Dodge Caravan with 105,000 miles, the estimate almost totaled the vehicle! Of course, they want to replace/repair/re-paint the whole front end......... we'll see what the guy says tomorrow!
