Hi, I'm headed that way, stopped eating red meat about 8 weeks ago. Still eating chicken but wanting to stop eating any flesh all together. It is something I have wanted to do for a long time so I did it.
Just wanting some vegetarian menu ideas if ya know any.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Tami!
My daughter is a Vegi as we call none meat eater here in the UK. There are thousands of good recipes on the net. Just type in vegetarian recipes and you will find thousands of things to make. There are many vegetarian foods that mimic meats in the stores so you can have your bacon etc. although it's not quite the same it's a good taste still and adds variety to meals. I eat loads of vege meals as they taste really good. I suppose I'm a vege 80% of the time!

I'm a veggie!

I've been one for about 14 yrs. ( WOW! Over half my life! )

My advice, dont' fill up on all carbs, ( a mistake I made in my early teens ) and be creative!

People are always asking me what I eat, seems weird to me that they can't picture a meal without meat. Make chilli with beans and veggies, casseroles with beans cheese etc. Basically, just replace veggies and beens with meat in any dish.
I can even make Hamburger helper. I just use sauteed mushrooms and veggies instead of meat. It's soo yummy!

When we are BBQ'ing, I just put veggies on the grill and eat them with a bun.

I've never been one to buy those 'pretend to be meat' products. I don't like meat, so I don't need to eat something that resembles it. Veggies are enough for me.

Okay, probably more than you wanted to know. PM me if you need more ideas.

I'm a Veggie too and have been so for the past 10 and a half years. I too cut out red meat when I was about 12 - I never liked it and used to store the chewed meat in my cheek and feed it to the dogs under the table when my parents weren't looking!! I then totally stopped eating meat on my 14th birthday.

I'm quite a big girl and people are shocked when they hear I'm a Veggie - they assume you have to be skinny, but unfortunately chocolate is suitable for Vegetarians!!!  bear_grin

I must admit that I LOVE my carbs (and they're ideal for my Slimming World diet!). I eat lots of pasta with veg and jacket potatoes. I also use Quorn mince and make chilli's, bolognese and lasagne. I agree with Jane - if you search the net, there are LOADS of recipe's on there.

Congratulations on becoming meat-free!!   bear_thumb

A veggie friend of mine lost 9stone (126lbs) on Slimming World green diet. I'm not veggie but I love the food choices anyway. A favourite of mine is large flatcap mushrooms stuffed with cooked cous cous or rice and then a little garlic on top and low fat cheese, cook in the oven for 10 mins or so and serve with salad. We have a meat substitute called quorn here and I like those products too.

You go for it and just don't go overboard on the bread and pizzas!

I'm a veggie- no meat of any kind, eggs, milk or dairy.
But you don't want to follow my diet, I pretty much only eat pasta.

Have to do at least 2 miles a day on the glider to my weight down.

Good Luck on your food search & Congratulations on not eatting meat!

I'm not a veggie, but just wanted to say you can add fresh ground flax seed to your meals to get your omega 3s and 6s  bear_thumb   Its a great tasting way to get important oils and amino building blocks (protein) in your diet.

Congrats on your new lifestyle change...and good luck with it!  I'm sure you'll have lots of support and recipes from the other vegetarians on here

Oh My I feel like such a cave man !!  I still love a good steak !! Sorry,... I know it would be better for me to give up meat but ...... I 90% of the time don't do beef though. I do allot of turkey and fish. I really like chicken too. I do skim milk and veggies, and fruit.  So I guess I am a well rounded eater. IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE !!! Tee Hee  bear_rolleyes  If I could just get rid of all the goodies !!! bear_tongue

I pick up a magazine called Veggie Life now and then.  I'm not a vegetarian, I still eat poultry and fish, but with my other diet restrictions (no wheat or dairy) the recipes in this magazine are great.  I can substitute any wheat item out. Last spring they had a whole section on spring rolls and I use those recipes at least 2 times a month..they're awesome!  I also luv the web site www.allrecipes.com.  Choose recipes that have high ratings, read the comments, and you'll never go wrong.  I've found some great stuff out there, esp for the holidays bear_thumb  (www.foodtv.com is good too, that's the Food Network)

Good Luck!!

Thanks everyone for all the great info.
My husband has also given up red meat! :)
We have such compassion for animals and I think we are just ready for the lifestyle change.
I heard someone say once "something should not have to die just for you to eat"
and that has stayed in my head for some time now.
So I"m happy and proud I'm on my way!
Thanks for the websites and food ideas and I will get that vegitarian magazine for sure.

Both of my daughters are vegetarians.  My hubby and I still eat some meat, although not very much . . . chicken, mostly.  It is important to make sure you get those amino acids in your diet.  Isn't Diane (Nettie) a veggie?

I'm not a vegetarian - main reason is I think it would be way too much work to make healthy meals that include all the necessities - and okay, I just LOVE seafood and fish far too much to ever give them up!  bear_grin  I could certainly do without red meat without too much sacrifice - well other than maybe a good steak once or twice a year and the occasional hamburger, after all I live in beef country so got to keep everyone happy -  bear_grin
I know there are some fantastic vegetarian dishes - have a friend whose son is vegan and have had some great meals there when her son is home - but I guess I am just too lazy and I'd never convince my husband to give up his meat so I'd be making double meals everyday. Really admire those sticking to their convictions in spite of the extra work!

Hi Tami,
I've been a veg head for about 2 1/2 years now and I've just started to cut out eggs and trying to give up cheese.  I use a lot of tofu, and beans for protein.  Like  a few girls have mentioned vegetarian times is a great mag for ideas.  I have many good vegi cook books and a few vegan ones to.  It is amazing how much there is out there that dosen't require meat.  I try to eat as much organic food as possible, especially fruits and veggies.  All my skin care products are vegan and I have started to use vegan house hold cleaners too, more expensive but worth the extra $$$, no animal testing and no animal by products and good for the enviorment too!
Congrats on making the switch I think you will find you won't miss the meat once you learn to create yummy veggi meals.
Hugs Deborah

Hi Tami, I was a veg for around 5 yrs..always wanted to be from when I was young coz I love animals but growing up in a European family it was a bit difficult!  Anyway, I turned veg in my early 20's mainly coz of the meds I was on.  Most food made me sick to the stomach, esp meat, so easy way to give it up.  Then a couple of years ago I came off one of my meds and my appetitive came back lol.  I wanted sausages and burgers!!!!  So I'm a carnivore again bear_sad

My sister is a vegie too but doesn't eat right relying on too many potatoes!!  Her 6 yr old daughter decided she doesn't want to eat meat either at 5 1/2.  She gets very upset when someone mentions animals as a food source.  Mind you, its okay to say something like butterchicken but not chicken by itself lol.  so funny!

I haven't eaten meat for about 5 years but I do eat fish. I'm such a big animal lover and too sensitive to eat meat! I had to stop eating meat because I got "sick in my heart" of thinking about what had been done to the animals...  bear_sad

Now, I'm a happy non meat eater!  bear_grin

Here I am lurking about and saw a subject close to my heart.First let me say to all of you fellow veggies "I love you all and you make me sooo happy!!!!.
I have been a vegetraian for 34 years now during which time I was a competetive power lifter and gave birth to a baby just under ten pounds.I say this to halt the "its not healthy folks".My daughter has never eaten anthing with a face and is an almost six foot 17 year old who has not been to a doctor since primary school.
The moment you stop eating meals that involve the suffering of animals you will see and feel changes.
I love all vegetables and grow most of them myself.I don't like the brown meat substitutes as they taste too much like cow for me.I do like marinated tofu andthe white quorn products.I live mostly on wholewheat pasta and brown rice with curry.I love indian food best.Make sure you do combinations like brown rice with lentils and brown bread as they replace the first class proteins.Avacado pears give your your vitaminb's.Variety is the best way to stay healthy while being a veggie. It is easier to eat properly as you take in much less fat.Meat rots in your stomach for as long as three days but vegetables sail through so you will have happy bowels too(nothing like a happy bowel)The downside is the wind.I could probably power a small generator single handed.Vegeterinas live ten percent longer too statistically.
Think of the gorilla eating his vegetables and being one of the strongest animals out there.I have never missed meat and love my food.
You willbe a true animal lover and not just a pet lover too.
Hugs of encouragement!!!
Diane xxx

Windy veggies.............LOL

I'm not windy at all! Guess I"m lucky.

It's soo nice to find others that share my eating view. People think it's soo weird to be a veggie.

Diane, I forgot you were a power lifter. What a great example you are.
Did you reaise you daughter as a veggie? You said sh'es never eaten anything with a face.
I struggle with the fact, that when I have kids, I'm not sure if I should feed them meat or not as my boyfriend eats meat and always will.

And you're soo right, gorillas are HUGE and strong and just like us. Great example

Tami, do you get a quick-set jelly in the US? It's usually in a crystal/granule form. These are almost always suitable for veggies!
