Hi Everyone,
I feel I need to draw your attention to some sickening news that has been suppressed by both US & Australian governments..This morning I received an email from a dear friend in Philadelphia, she, like most of us on TT's is a devoted animal lover and was absolutely distraught when she heard what has been going on in China...I was so sickened & upset by this but feel helpless, surely something has to be done to stop this happening...here is a link

There was a similar thing shown here on the TV in the UK. I was so shocked by what was happening that I cried all night. They showed clips of German Shepard dogs being skinned alive. Their pelts sell for $10.......it's just wrong.  bear_sad

Coming from a government that embraced (embraces) female infanticide and gendercide why does this not surprise. If a government does not care that it's "one child policy" essentially created such a huge population imbalance that the incident of kidnapping and salve-trading of women for wives is on the rise, then what would make them care about these poor dogs?
This is disgusting on all levels, but not surprising given the bass-ackward government track record.

As my one friend always says..."follow the moneytrail"...if you want to make a point: get 'em where it hurts...I'll be boycotting products and the 2008 Olympics.

I can't get those horrific images out of my head and I completely agree with you Chrissi, the only way to hurt them is to stop buying their goods...I for one won't be buying anything marked made in China!! bear_angry

Larry King had a program on this quite a few months ago. Being an animal lover as are all of you I also was sickened by this practise and in fact couldn't watch the whole show as I was so upset!!!! Paul McCartney and his ex wife are really involved in trying to stop this My understanding from this program was that the US has stopped importing all articles that are made in China  which are trimmed with animal fur. Many of the collars on coats etc are trimmed with the fur from these dogs and cats. You may have also seen those cute looking cat ornaments that are like real fur and are usually in a sleeping position- they are most likely made from the fur of the slaughtered animals as well.  Be sure if you are purchasing a coat with a fur collar or trim you might want to find out what kind of fur it is .Those selling these pelts are not above lying about what the fur really is

OMG!!! I knew that was cat fur! My brother sent me a little sleeping cat in a basket...made in China...I knew it! It didn't feel like a bunny at all! Both are horrific practices. This brings back a memory of a program that aired on HBO many years ago...I can't remember the country...they dipped live cats in boiling water and skinned them while they were still alive!!! They were served in a restaurant..I sat and cried  bear_cry The images are burned into my head! I was deeply disturbed by this.

I started to read the article Denise but I had to click back to TT.  How can people be so cruel they are just ...well I can't think of a word bad enough to describe them. I cherish my dogs and wouldn't hurt one hair on their darling bodies.  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry

What more can I say except as far as China's goods go for me it's a big NO.

Tearful hugs Jane.  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry

Denise,

When I saw this article it made me want to throw up !!!!

I can't believe that living in the 21st century these barbaric practices are still going on.

But then why am I surprised like Chrissi said some of their methods and laws are highly questionable!!!

Whaling, killing tigers etc for medicines that DON'T work!! I even heard on the radio once that a man was told that he could cure his AIDS by having sex witha newborn baby. Now that is SICK !!!!

What a world we live in!!! The only good thing they are doing is waking up to the realisation about the Pandas and are starting to protect them. See driven by the dollar !!!

I guess my greatest question is why don't they have the rabies vaccine for their dogs?  First and foremost I am an animal lover, so don't send me down in flames here... but if those animals don't have a rabies vaccine, and the rabies is running rampant just now, the kindest thing is for the strays to be rounded up and killed HUMANELY.  Being as its China, I sincerely doubt this will happen.  I know its awful, but if the animals have a strong possibility of contracting rabies, it is kinder to put them down than to have them go through the final stages of rabies.  If people have an indoor pet, I think this should be something considered, and the animals spared, as contact should be limited, so the threat shouldn't be so great.

I hate to point it out, but dog and cat are on the menu in China.  And yes, pelts will be used because they use everything on an animal.  As for the tortured methods in which the animals are killed.... I remember reading an article back in the 80s about the Korean methods of dog killing, and they said it was to get the adrenaline into the meat to make it sweeter.  This seems very backwards to me, as other people who hunt say its far better to kill the animal before they can get an adrenaline rush, as it turns the meat a funny flavor.

As for how to strike back at this .....you're absolutely right ~ hit 'em with a boycott for the products and 2008 Olympics.  I can't imagine how such a nation can be so forwards in some things, and so backwards in others.

I KNEW I shouldn't have gone to read that.  bear_wacko  bear_cry
That is gross and I can not bring myself to do fix dinner now.

I have to say this..... this evil behavior has been going on for years... this is nothing new! Do you really think that boycotting stuff made in China and the 2008 Olympics is going to change it? Do you not think folks have been boycotting things made in China for years and years already for reasons such as this? Well, they have and where has it gotten these animals? I'm not saying it doesn't hurt to go forward with your boycotting... I'm all for it!!! But sadly..... you shouldn't expect much. More drastic measures, though I don't know what, have to be taken.

It was on FOX NEWS CHANNEL and also in the Weekly Standard.  And it is sick.

i have a theory and I know none of you want to hear old dilu the political junky's idea.....

But China has been branching out....they even have some private business and some affluance seeping down to the lower classes....Imagine that!  some extra food for the poor people!

well, kill something that nearly every family has and what does it do....put the fear of MAO in them?

I think it has nothing to do with Rabies and everything to do with intimidation.

Only about 40 of the tested dogs had rabies, and many of the poor animals had their rabies shots.

Think bigger picture.

If the US suddenly started killing off all the dogs for some disease that hadn't made it yet wouldn't you all think someting was off, tilting, wrong, a lie?

Think intimadation and then it makes sense.  First your dog....then your one child that you are allowed and then what?  You?

Just an old woman's musings.  And thank God you all are sickened by this....it means it would be impossible for the same sort of tactics to be used on us.

But we must always be vigalent, because there are those who would love to control us too.

I received notice of this story from Animals Asia. Not only are they helping out the Moon Bears in China and now in Vietnam, but also working on saving dogs and cats. If you want to help them, go to the Animals Asia website.

Like Ellen and Debbie I have known about this for a while now.I did not use the link as I get so much through the mail and find it hard to look at.I think I know the vile practise it is referring too.It has been practised in  many asian countries for ever.Paul Mcartney has been highlighting it on television and it is great to hear that people are starting to know about it.I am unsure if it is cultural or not.So many barbaric acts that happen in China are more recent.Bear farming is a relatively new idea .I remember the restaurants that sprung up during the yuppie era where diners could choose a live kitten kill it themselves and eat it.This cannot be cultural ???not when it is a banker or lawyer using this practise.I have chinese realtives that find my being a vegetarian and having pets odd but this comes up with all different races .A few years back I remember all the dogs being bought and sent to china for pelts and food, golden retreivers being a favourite. We find it more disturbing because it is happening to animals we have as pets and friends but I don't think they view them as any different to say cows and sheep.I have been trying so hard to understand this for a long long time.I can't help myself but I have not been able to eat chinese food or buy anything made there in years.I hate to feel racist in any way but the amount of material I get through the post from animal charities I support has made me this way.
