Dear all,

I have so many pictures to show you I needed to skip into a few posts!

Here is a map of Brittany to help you!

As a start, I invite you to discover my two favourite places when I go back to Britain to visit my parents.

First one is Brest's commercial port.
That's not for the port itself but for some boats that are very special to me.
Actually, my fav boats are: La Recouvrance (She was not there this time), Notre Dame de Rumengol (was not home either  bear_cry ) and the Abeilles (these are our high sea rescue tug boats).
La Recouvrance is a copy of a very old schooner (1817). I was there at the very beginning of its building in 1991 in Brest. she is 42 m long. The schooner that inspired her was named Iris. I went regularly to follow its construction. I was there too the day she was put on the sea for the first time in july 1992 (she was just a hull at this time!).

You can see more pictures of La Recouvrance on the following website:

Isn't she beautiful?
Now we can pay for a cruise on her board. I hope to be able to afford such a cruise some day...

Notre Dame de Rumengol is very special for me because when a kid, I made a one day cruise on her board with my classroom, my English teacher and my biology teacher, on a local river (named Elorn). Notre Dame de Rumengol is a dundee made in 1945 in Camaret (that's a town in Brittany). She is 22 m long. She has been used to carry wine from Oran to Port Vandres, then sand between Brittany and England, then she was bought by some association in Brest and she carries passengers. She happened to carry onions, cabbages and raspberries too in the past to go to England.

The pic was taken some years ago (I used my normal camera and then scanned the pic).

Finally, I love to see our giant high sea rescue tug boats. We used to have Abeille Flandres as the biggest of our float. She has been recently replaced by Abeille Bourbon, which is even more bigger. Abeille flandres is now working on the Mediterranean sea.

I promised more and here is my favourite chapel :

It is on the sea coast and we can either reach it by the road : there is a wonderful touristic road, or by the pathway along the coast. This Chapel Saint Samson. The chapel was recently restored. It used to be closed and I only happened to go inside once.

Looks like a postcard and I am sure you understand why painters love so much this chapel!

We were lucky enough to find the chapel opened this time and went inside. We were amazed by the beauty of the two windows and here is the one showing Saint Samson:

The inside is almost empty and I think the restoration is not fully completed inside. but they really did a great job.

Well, enough for now!

Next post will concern some light houses!

Keep tuned!

Beary hugs,
Sophie.

Hi Sophie. What an interesting set of pictures. I would alo like to take a cruise on La Recouvrance, she looks a wonderful vessel!

The small chapel is wonderful, do you know how old it is? I love stain glass windows and this one of Saint Samson
with the sick man is a work of art.
Thanks for sharing Sophie.

I have this odd feeling Sophie, that you some how have an affection for "boats"? bear_grin

I got that same idea, Wendy!  Wow, Sophie!  Is there anything you DON'T know about?  Your knowledge of sea vessels, and your interest in them, is just incredible.

Beautiful photos, by the way.  I especially love the chapel.  Yes, it does look like a painter's dream.

Oh, I can hardly wait for the lighthouses.  My grandfather (Dad's dad) was a light house keeper.  My dad has some fun stories about growing up near a light house.
