Kwatzu-s-Stellar-Jay.jpgDSC02198-3.JPG

We have Stellar jays, for you west coast gals they look just like cardinals but are nearly cobalt blue.

Yesterday I was sitting in the swing and had the almost defunct soaker hose on.  When a soaker hose becomes almost defunct it shoots out tiny streams of water, which I think is really cool because the birds come from all over to play in the water.

Well this was occuring right in front of the front door.

Lately Kwatzu has wanted to be in the mud room which is really the entrance, or the front door.  Its a little space with a bench to put on bootsd etc that don't go into the house and hang dripping wet coats and stuff like that.  Then there is another set of dorrs to come into the house.

Kwatzu has been driving me crazy wanting to be in this mud room area, which I keep closed because the house stays coller.

So I am watching this one particular Stellar Jay.  And he starts strutting his stuff infront of the door....back and forth.........forth and back............

And it hits me.

This little smarty pants knows there is a cat on the other side of the door...and he knows he is perfectly safe....as he pecks at the door.....and he is basically giving old Kwatzu the one finger salute....so to speak.

We all know I am a little off.....but guys, I thought this was hysterical.....I managed to get you one piccy of the Jay, sorry....they move quickly...what can I say

When i went back into the house Kwatzy was right by the door....smelling sniffing and making cute little "Killer Kitty" noises.

And finally, I don't know what the harbinger of fall is for you, but for me it is this:

the Poison Oak turning red...................I kill mine...I go on poison oak patrol and spray it with straight bleach-doesn't mess with the water table like poisons might..........so I went down the road a bit to find some for you.....Isn't it pretty....love it when it turns red-means its easier to spot amongs the undergrowth and you can avoid it better....nasty nasty stuff, if you've never had it this is what it does:

the oils get on your skin and turn into pustules...........itchy draining tormenting pustules..and some people get it in their throats ( from burning piles of it) and ears and eyes and well, just about any where you can imagine!

That's why I have regular PoisonOak Patrol.........

Dilu, THANX for your pix of oregonish backwood flora & fauna!
Poison oak looks some plant that I´m familiar with, but I guess it is not, because the consequences sound terrible!!

Have a smashing evening!

Oh great Dilu...I am deathly allergic to poison oak...I'm probably going to break out just looking at the picture.  If you don't hear from me for awhile it's because I'm covered in the stuff.

Thank you, Dilu, for the bleach tip.  I try to avoid the toxic weed killers, but I do need to rid ourselves of poison ivy.  I will have my husband spray it, because I can't even get close enough to the stuff.  As a kid I didn't even have to touch it to get it, and I got it very bad.  My poison ivy turns into enormous blisters in large areas.  It's really nasty.  Also, does it seem a bit early for the stuff to be turning?  I'm feeling an early winter coming on.

Wonderful pictures....love the Stellar Jays, we have the cardinals which have been visiting our yard alot recently!

Poison Ivy and Poison Oak......Yup, been around them, have not had any reactions to them.......when I was younger, I would get back at my brothers when they would pick on me. I would sit in the poison ivy patch and they would end up itching!  bear_whistle  I, on the other hand would have no problem  bear_happy  bear_tongue  Mom knew, but could not prove, that I was the one who caused my brothers to get the itchy scratchy oozy stuff!

Don't dilute the bleach and the really cheap stuff works great....I try to do it in the early morning so that when the sun gets on it it can work really good.  Be sure not to leave it in your sprayer though-it will ruin the rubber gastkets.

I just use a kitchen sprayer-  its easy to rinse.  AND our water table is 30 feet down.  Thats pretty shallow compared to most of the states around us....so because the water is so shallow I don't want to use anything that isn't health friendly.

for you guys out there who are going WHAT?!  Is she nuts....

Bleach is what they use in public water supplies and swimming pools etc.  If you live in a city you have bleach in your water.  If you don't like the chlorine taste you can let the water sit for a few hours and the bleach will evaporate out.

back in the 60's my mom used to fill up her bleach bottles with water when ever she finished using them-she had that Castro-has-the-bomb- kind of mentality....Dad wanted a bomb shelter.....then we all moved to Mariposa....had our own water so we didn't need to worry so much.

And the bleach works well for other noxious and obnoxious weeds too....just don't let it get on something you care about.
