I am doing a show in December. This is a juried artist show that promotes handmade items. They have a theme of Austrian Christmas Market and they ask that your booth be decorated accordingly. My problem is that I don't have a clue about an Austrian Christmas Market. If anyone out there has any ideas, I would love to hear from you.
Hi Millie,
My fiance and I went to Vienna for Christmas a few years ago and visited a lovely Christmas market, I'll try to attach a few photos for you. All the stands were made like wooden cabins, smaller versions of what you would see in the countryside in Austria if you know what I mean? Lots of christmas balls (many hand painted), mulled wine, fir tree trimming around the tops of the cabins (sure you can buy this fake if you like to hang nicely around the edge of your table for instance). Often lace was used on the table tops to display items on - generally a very christmasy feel! Just drop me an email if you want to ask questions, I'd be happy to bounce ideas back and forth if it would help you...
Catherine,
Thank you so much for the photos. What a beautiful place to spend Christmas. You have given me some great ideas for my booth. I will get in touch with you after I have given it some thought and we can compare ideas. You have been a great help.
Thanks so much.
I've been eagerly waiting for someone to show what a real Austrian Christmas would look like ! Aren't the shops and lights lovely? ....mmmmmm.... mulled wine...boy if you could get that scent at your booth, I bet people would linger longer Maybe one of those aroma defusers and some essential oils of cloves, cinnamon, orange?
Debbie,
Thanks for that suggestion. That is something that I can do at no extra cost. Since that spicey fragrance is one of my favorites at Christmas, I already have the candles, oils etc. I just never thought of using them in my booth. My brain is spinning with ideas. I probably better start writing these things down. Thanks again.
Google Austrian Christmas Market and you will get more info than you could possibly need. I LOVE Google!!!
Debbie´s idea is great ! Mulled wine ( humans do also go atfer smells ) and maybe you can get one of these small ceramics, which is big enough for one apple that can be roastet over a small candle.... gives a great odour!!
I´d put some wooden shingls somehow on above the table, and spray them with snow. And don´t forget the chest nuts!
I found some pix also from other christmas markets in Vienna:
I am thinking, that I have a jug of one of the christmas markets somewhere in the basement. If you buy mulled wine, you have to pay extra for the ceramic jug that you can eiuther take home and use as a coffe mug, or give back and get the deposite back.
If I find it, I might mail it to you, if you like- so you have an authentic piece of viennese christmas market
Just let me know!
Gaby
Millie, Where is your show? I want to come. Is it in Ohio?
Gaby,
I would absolutely love it. I also love the pictures. Now, guess where I want to go for Christmas. Actually, I have always wanted to spend a Christmas in Germany. My father's family is German, and I would love to visit. How could I go to Germany without taking in the Austrian Christmas Market? I guess I am dreaming big right now.
The show is in Gambier, Ohio on the campus of Kenyan College. It is December 3. I have never been to the show, but I have been told that it is really nice. They promote "high quality handcrafts". So there is a variety of items available. I am getting excited about this show.
Where is Gambier, OH? My son lives in Columbus......I have to check the calendar, maybe I can make my hubby take a few days off and travel down to see the show and my son! Dec. 3 is a Sunday?

Gambier is about 45 minutes northeast of Columbus. It is in Knox County. The show is on Sunday, December 3. I am not sure of the time, but I can check on that.
Checked my calendar, can't make it.....have a workshop on Saturday. That wouldn't give me enough time to drive the 10 hours to get there. Maybe next time there is one in Ohio, I can make it down.

I´m commuting between dentist and vet and work and try to be a good host to my 2 aunts who came to visite for a few days....

I´ll post here when I found it, then you can send me your adress.
Have a smashing weekend!
Gaby
Gaby,
Thank you so much. Have a wonderful time in Germany. I wish I were there.
Awwww they look fantastic, we don't have anything like that here, it would be wonderful if we did!! It's quite boring here in fact, just shops, no atmosphere, amybe I'll hold my own little market!! Don't you just love Christmas.......
Have a wonderful show Millie!
Nina, I have to admit something: I´ve been digging through my basement and can´t find the mug- it dawns on me that I gave it to a friend who´s been visiting me last year- I think.
BUT:
EVEN BETTER:
I wanted so badly for you to have something authentic from Vienna for your show and contacted the Austrian tourist information and guess what?
There is a lovely lady, who´s gonna mail you a mug.
So, please send me your address and soon you´ll hold it in hand.
Gaby
Gaby,
Thank you so much. I have sent my address to you.

I will definitely post pics when I get the mug. I am so excited.
