What do you do when you make a bear that you don't like very much? Do you still try to sell it or do you chuck it....I've made one ....and I can't do a makeover as I don't have any of the mohair left and I bought it off ebay so I don't think I'll be able to get any more. His arms and legs are too skinny ( I think anyway!!! )...
So has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do with the offending bear.... I know what I'd like to do!!!
I put them on top of my wardrobe, so I don“t have to look at them.
And there they can stay and think about it.
Put a sweater on it and then be sure to describe it as "wearing a wooly sweater to keep his slender arms warm!"
Ha! I like Shelli's fix.
But the important thing is that you don't know who may be looking for a bear just like what you are about to chuck out in the trash.
Do you have a girl friend who has a hubby that you wonder about? "What on earth was she thinking when she married him?"
Well, she liked him and chose him.
So you could cross your fingers and hope for someone to chose your poor bear.....but surely not throw him out.
Once the director of a movie my dad was helping on insisted my dad sell him his pallet. the wood thing he mixed his colors on...he even insisted dad sign it. Dad thought the director was nuts, but he went along with it.
Well every time they went to dinner or other places where this director was, the director would tell the story and say how proud he was to have it.
It's just a piece of wood with paint scribles all over it. To dad.
The the director? Who knows, but I remember how much he paid, so he must have thought it was great! And since it was the ONLY one dad ever signed and sold the director did a have an original...
Re: skinny legs and arms, I am strugelling with the same problem in the doll line. I certainly can share your frustration.
Love Shelli's solution and Dilu's points!
Can you make the body skinny to go with the limbs? Call is "Stick"? Perhaps make an anime bear out of it?
If you decide to dispose of it, is it big enough that you can reuse the mohair for a smaller bear? Reuse the stuffing, eyes, etc? I can't be bothered with such things...... taking apart a bear. But I know some do this to salvage what they can for another project. My misfits just live in a box in the cellar. Reminders of what NOT to do when designing! I'll take them apart one day or come up with a makeover that I can do with what I have on hand.
You could also use it a practice bear. Practice oil paints or airbrushing, eyelids, embroidery, needle sculpting, scissor sculpting, dart practice!
But in closing I will say this (I usually save it for yardsales and flea markets!)
One Man's Junk is Another Man's Treasure!
(Not that I'm implying your bear is junk, mind you!!! Just that even though you don't love it, someone else will!)
And I would like to see it by the way !!
Alright Jodi you asked for it!!!
Having looked at the photos he doesn't look as bad as he does in the flesh (or maybe its just me!!!! )
but his arms and legs don't look as skinny as they feel
Put a sweater on it and then be sure to describe it as "wearing a wooly sweater to keep his slender arms warm!"
I love this idea
And Dilu I see your point after all beauty is in the eye of the beholder!!!
Hi Sarah Jane - I once made the ugliest, horriblest, yukkiest bear you can imagine.......I hated it....it was all out of proportion....I shudder just thinking about it. Anyway went to a show only to find this bear in my bag.....Garth, darling hubby had thrown him in AND made a tag for him. We had a domestic at the show as he wanted to put him on the table and I wanted to throw IT in the bin. I eventaully stormed off as the show opened to calm down......returned after 30min of fuming to other artists abot stubborn husbands and horrible failures and the TOTAL embarrassment of having this bear on my table.
Garth was beside himself.....he'd sold a bear while I was gone.....within 10mins of the doors opening.....you KNOW what bear he had sold don't you!!!!!!!! The collector had to come back and rave to me for about 20mins about how she loved the bear and it was so unusual and cute and adorable........yuk!!! I had to smile all the time!!!!
So there is a collector for every bear and they will love him.........and your bear is fantastic compared to my monstrosity believe me!!!
Now Sarah Jane!!! You need a stern talking to! tehe there is nothing wrong with this bear! he is so cute and i love his ears! definitely don't throw him out or anything...he will sell!! hehe, you'll probably end up loving him more than your others lol...how many of us do that!
He's cute Sarah. You my dear are far too critical!
Thanks everyone...I must admit he is growing on me little by little..
Sandra your story made me laugh so much, it sounds just like something my hubby would do  ....he thinks this little one is cute too!!!
Anyway I'll leave him intact for now but if I find another piece of this mohair maybe I'll rip his arms and legs off!!!
Right girls: why not adding a topic: "Unloved bears for adoption"?
Maybe the future mom of your unloved one is among us...
Beary hugs,
Sophie.
