Wow, Wendy you are so lucky to have such beautiful birds in your garden.

Just what do you mean when you refer to the other birds as 28's? Not getting it!

Jayne, 28 is the name of the type of parrot- Maybe Wendy knows why- theres probably some bizarre story behind it, but thats what they are called, 28 Parrots;)  Galahs are so much fun to watch, they are very comical the way they strut around like fat old men  bear_original .
Wendy I am surprised you don't usually get Galahs? Are they not common in WA?

DebbieD Posts: 3,540

Wow!  Its like being back in Tropical Pets, the store I used to work at in Eugene, OR long, long, long time ago.... Although you've just got these beauties right outside your window  :photo:   They are a lot of fun to watch!

Is the 28 the little dove in the background?  Even that's got a pretty splash of colour at its throat.  Our doves are always getting picked on, even though they're bigger than most of the other species...go figure  bear_wacko

Oh wow Wendy!  I didn't realise Galahs were real birds, I thought it was a just a term used to take the rise out of someone ... ie.,  " ya great galah!"

However, to redeem myself, I can lay claim to recognising Rosellas ... my mum used to breed those!

Well I have never heard of either of these birds, but they are wonderful.  You don't know how I would love to look out my window right now and see such beautiful birds out there.  You make me jealous.  I would love to visit your area some day.

Wendy those birds are amazing. Thank you for sharing your pictures!  Their coloring is striking. I love watching the birds out my back window, but here in Ohio it's cardinals, bluejays, and wrens mostly. We do have a pair of red tailed hawks which have a nest in the trees at the very back of out yard. They are cool to watch.

Dilu, you LUCKY bugger. We arent allowed exoctic birds without a special and expensive license.
I'm really surprised you lot have'nt heard of a Galah.
We do have lots of them here and they are a fun loving and very comical bird. They live in large groups and get along really well. The Green parrot whos real name is 'Pt Lincoln'  is nicknamed '28' because some bright spark reckon's it sounds like the parrot is saying 28 when they call to each other. They have a lovely bell like voice very melodic. They dont screech like Galahs or Sulphur crest cockatoos.
We dont get Sulphur cresteds here only 'red tail blacks' and there is another black cockatoo as well whos name escapes me right now.
It is the first time I have had galahs visit my garden. I see them all the time on road verges and in parks. There is a very large group of a hundred or so that have taken over the playground equipment at the aquatic centre in Warnbro.  They really do play on the equipment. They are wonderful to watch.
The little bird on the clothes line is a Turtle dove.  The imported dove and the indiginous dove are so similar that you would have to be an expert to tell the difference. So they are all protected. But it is illegal to feed and or encourage wild pigeons. The fines are hefty. The pigeons are a European import. We call them flying rats here.
But it wouldnt surprise me if they were called that everywhere. bear_grin
I'm glad you all enjoyed the parrots as much as I do. My garden is only 6x8metres. Really tiny. bear_grin
It looks bigger in photos though. Which I find weird. bear_thumb

Wendy, there's a show coming on the ABC this year, called Australia - The Land of the Parrots (Or something like it)  Can't wait for it.

Our Neighbours up the back have a little bird bath.  It's funny to watch the Cockatoos and the Gallahs fight over it.  Once, the Gallahs had it, and the Cockatoos scared them off.  So, I watched a Gallah go and get a long branch, then fly over to a Cockatoo having a bath, and drop it on his head LOL  It was sooooo funny.  The Cockatoos are just as naughty.  They often scare our pets, one just screamed at me, as it flew right over me LOL I jumped a mile high - I can imagine it laughing at me.

They are fun to watch.  But the baby Gallahs that are just starting to learn to fly, all around our house are sooooo noisey.  The scream and scream for Mumma/Dadda to feed them - but they are so cute to watch.

I always enjoy your photos, being another parrot lover.

I often think how much Cockatoos are worth in other places- specially early in the morning when there is a flock flying around  squawking wildly lol.
I *love* Macaws, I imagine they are horribly noisy too.

OH Danni youre a scream!! Try and keep your camera handy. Would love to see your parrots playing.
The 28s are a serious bird. They are funny when watching them keep in line for the feed dish. They dont allow any pushing in. They make sure each new bird goes to the back of the line. It is rare to see two males sharing the seed dish. They are usually old and beaten.  I have a blind female and her partner visit daily. He has been using my garden as birdie daycare . He drops her off gets her settled at the seed dish and then leaves and comes back a couple of hours later to pick her up.  He abandoned her one night. She got quite distressed . That is when I found out she is. I was terrified the cat was going to get her. All came good in the end. I havent seen them in the garden for a couple of days. Which has me worried all anew.
Tami I had a hawk land on my clothes line one afternoon. Maybe two years back now. I didnt think the line was going to hold under the weight.  My goodness they are BIG. They are just so magestic looking. It took my breathe away. Yet you lucky devil have them nesting in your garden. WOWOWOW!!! We want photos dont we folks???  We want to see the Macaw as well. Dilu? and Danni we want pics at the watering dish bear_thumb
Dont ya just love birds. They are seriously underrated.

I agree that they are underratted Wendy.  I was reading an article, about scientists being stunned that birds have a sense of humour!  Well, I could have told them that! LOL

We had a cockatiel who was amazing - whenever he did something funny, (or thought he did something funny) he would sing GO BELLA (Yes, we thought he was a girl LOL) That bird was seriously funny, very very clever. I miss him everyday.  He used to think the best joke was to play boo.  He'd boo us, and we'd scream, and off he'd go, chanting GO BELLA GO BELLA.

We have a new little boy, he's very clever, but not quite as clever (probably because we have a cage full of girls, and he isn't sure where his loyalties lie)  But they are amazing - little birds can be sooooo smart - makes me want an African Grey - the smarted birds there are (shame they aren't the purtiest! LOL)

I agree - I want to see photos of Dilu's Macaw (what beauties - My sister has been lucky enough to see MINI MACAWS!!!!)  I will try to get some photos - hope the neighbours don't mind - I'm sure they won't. We are planning to get a bath and feedbowl for the birds also - hopefully we can steal some of our neighbour's visitors LOL

I lovvvve birdie talk!

DVgalahs-and-lorries.jpgCockatooGangm.jpgI could watch the birds forever as most of them are so comical especially the parrots. We sometimes can get up to 30 Galah's and those babies, geez! are they noisey  bear_rolleyes Has me shouting at mum and dad to feed them  bear_grin  The Rainbow Lori's can't do anything quietly and the little Scaly's are no better. We quite often get a gang of Cockatoo's who come and hang out around the bird feeder and then head for the lemon tree, not a good idea - makes my eyes water when I think of them having a nibble at the lemons  bear_cry Pretty busy around here with the birds as we also get the King Parrot, Yellow Cheeked Black Cockatoo. Big excitement the other day as we saw a Major Mitchell Cockatoo (Pink Cocky) with a gang of the other ones. I reckon it had either gone of course by about 100km or was an escapee as you only find them further inland.

Here are a couple of pictures for you all to see. Hugs Lyn  bear_flower

Gorgeous photos - I'm jealous!

Oh Dani my sentiments exactly. OH WOW Lyn I just love your set up. Thats what I want.!!!
What a lovely yard you have. I really like that water fountain. How does it work?. Does it circulate the water?
You birds are just wonderful. We dont get the sulphur crested over here. We get a variety of Corellas and the black cockatoos. I only see the black ones when its about to rain. Then great flocks of them fly over.
Kookaburras are'nt indiginous here either, they are from aviery escapees, same with the rosellas.
Your photos are truely wonderful bear_thumb
