While lying on the couch sick and surfing through the junk on TV I came upon a true story about Little Bart and his sister Honey Bump... grizzzly bears... who were resuced in Alaska at 5 wks of age and raised by a couple here in the states. The original big Bart, famous for his movie roles, was also raised and trained by this couple who have made it their mission to preserve the natural habitat of grizzly bears and all wild creatures in North America. Anyway, the program I watched today mentioned "Vital Ground" a non-profit organization this couple founded to save the land necessary for Grizzlys to survive here in the US. Land that is becoming non-existent causing the Grizzly population to severely dimminish.

Have any of you seen the documentaries on Bart or Little Bart and Honey Bump or heard about Vital Ground?

I havent heard of 'vital ground' Daphne and I'm not sure about Bart and Honey Bump. I did see a documentary just recently about several mothers with their cubs and how they survived the hibination and how they foraged food in and near towns and camp sites to feed their young.  They showed the differences in the young that were raised up the mountain and the ones that their mothers raised on the edge of towns.  It was riverting stuff.
Or maybe I'm just a huge wildlife fan.  I must admit what we are doing to our animals breaks my heart and I'm constantly in tears over their plight.  I'll go have a look at that website now.
Thankyou for bringing it to our attention bear_thumb

I must admit what we are doing to our animals breaks my heart and I'm constantly in tears over their plight.

While we were house hunting a few weeks back we were driving through a thickly settled seaside town and came to an abrupt stop when the road was suddenly blocked. There were two cars stopped in the middle, between them a deer lay dying in the road. We'd just come from looking at houses in two new developments... constructed where woods once were. I felt sick. Here we were, considering one of these houses which I somehow deduced meant we were supporting the ruination of wildlife habitat. I felt so awful and told hubby we were not buying a new construction house for this very reason. Let someone else be in favor of taking away bambi's home and forcing him to live in town!

The practical extinction the grizzlies have been driven to here in the states is even more disheartening.

Oh yes Daphne ... there have been several documentaries done on Vital Ground. Way back when the original Bart was only a cub.

I've seen all the docs and it's one of my favourite charities, have had a link to Vital Ground on my website since I first did my site. Donations are always needed so if anyone can help it would be great...you can donate on line and there are more details on their site of how you can help.

Even adding a link on your website would help to bring the bear's plight to people's attention. Copy the banner and link to http://www.vitalground.org

Thanks Daphne for this post ... great idea!

They say Daphne ... that two heads are better than one!

I don't know how many bear makers/artists here are really into saving the real bears though ... but nothing ventured nothing gained.

Sandi,
I'm getting the feeling it's not too many.  bear_sad
Moon bears seem to be a different beast.... many have been involved with saving them.
Guess I just like to help those in my own corner of the world.
We do our part in supporting a cause we feel is important and that's what matters most, regardless of what it is.
Go Grizzlies!!!!

yes I found the website a couple of years ago and found it very interesting and love the people for what they are doing for the bears. Bart is soo nice to look at and I saw him in a movie not long ago.

bear_thumb Thanks Sandi for that bear link, will add it to my links page. I'm interested in saving the real bears where ever they are in the world. For many years I use to have a credit card which donated so much to Liberty (WAPSA). In fact I make it a rule that I will only donate money to animal charities. Sadly there is no hope for some of the animals but we can try to do our best for them.

Daphne I think if you are into saving bears ... it's there in your heart and it doesn't matter what type of bear they are. I love grizzlies right through to pandas and like Lyn I'm right into animal charities.

Lyn if you want some more Bear Links just go to my wesites Links page and take them from there.
