Can recommend a good book about Australia written by an American from Iowa, living in North Yorkshire, England...
"Down Under" by Bill Bryson...published by Doubleday in 2000, ISBN 0385 40817X
Try it if you like a good laugh and want to understand the Aussies a little better!
Thanks for the recommendation, Sandi. I'll look for it at the library.
I hope you enjoy it...Glenn's reading it at the moment and all I hear is chuckle, chuckle, chuckle then
It's a great book Sandi ~ hilarious, informative and somewhat shocking and sad all at the same time. My favourite story is about the little preschool girl in the bank (who'd been hanging out with chippies and sparkies) anyone whose read it will remember that story!
In the US/Canada the title is slightly different - look for it as "In a Sunburned Country"
My favourite Bryson will always be "Mother tongue" which is his book about the English language and also "Made in America" which is the story of English in American (but with so much more thrown in). I'm trying but not succeeding to read "A short history of almost everything"
Melissa thanks for the linfo...I'll try and get the other books for Glenn. I'm sure he'll enjoy them too, especialy "Mother Tongue"...Bryson certainly has a style of his own!
Stuart has this book - he thinks it's great!
