Well, after a stressful week and living so far away from some of our family, plus after having a headache all day, I decided I really needed some comfort food.  You know, something that you loved as a child and don't have any more and that is totally not good for you LOL!  Well, I stumbled across a microwave recipe for Treacle Pudding a few days ago, and I tried it tonight.  It came out really well, so after forcing myself to eat something reasonably nutritious (ie a toasted tuna sandwich), I devoured half of the treacle pudding covered with Lyles Golden syrup, while watching my favourite British show, Midsomer Murders.  I feel MUCH better, but I don't think I will be able to sleep for a bit

What do you consider comfort foods?

Brenda,

my favourite comfort meal, which I still indulge in every now and then is tomato soup with cheese melted into it.  Of course to be truly authentic, it should be my mum's tomato soup (and NEVER my aunties  bear_grin  ) When we were kids, the ultimate treat was to have soup accompanied by toast cooked on the open fire.  The fire was in the lounge and normally food was absolutely forbidden in there.  We used to have this on a Sunday night whilst watching The Dog Show (sheep dog trial - prime time tv in 1970s New zealand!) and The Wonderful World of Disney.  Such simple things!

Actually both my sister and I would love one more time to go back and have my grandma's rice pudding with bottled cherries...my grandma did all her cooking on a coal range and her puddings were legendary.  They would cook all morning and the anticipation of pudding made the truly awful boiled till it was pink cabbage bearable (just!)

Well aside from chocolate which has to be the ultimate comfort food...anything warm and gooey smothered in loads of whipped cream is good (and this is NOT meant to be rude!!!!  bear_laugh ) e.g. Self saucing pudding!!!

Melissa, your tomato soup with the melted cheese  sounds yummy.
I love tomato soup with melted cheese on toast also.

I love homemade mac & cheese!  The "good" kind with nice sharp cheddar in a little crust on top with a few buttered bread crumbs!

I also LOVE Cream of Wheat cereal with butter and brown sugar!

Melissa.... the rice pudding sounds wonderful!  I make rice pudding with raisins sometimes for my kids.

For me, a comfort food would be figs - fresh off the tree.  I can eat more than you could possibly imagine!  Of course, that means I have to wait until summer when they are ready.  Oh, the anticipation!

I saw a quotation the other day about chocolate, and it seems appropriate for this discussion.  It read:

"I have this theory that chocolate slows down the aging process...It may not be true, but do I dare take the chance?"

Oatmeal.jpgI posted one of my faves - Oatmeal - on another thread.
Here's the pic I made that day:

No gooey, gluey mess for me - chewy individuially plumped up flakes. Milk and a bit of brown sugar for a caramely flavor. I think I'll have to go make a bowl now!

I'd never heard of lemon and sugar on pancakes, until I was sent this link last year. It's one of our grandkids' favorites to watch:

and just found this one yesterday for Carrot cake

Does this girl know how to make Samples or not??!!

My favorite comfort food is Dump It Cake.....warm from the oven with just a little bit of vanilla bean ice cream.  It's yummy cold too....for breakfast!

Dump It Cake
Spread one 20 ounce can of pie filling (any flavor - I use cherry) in a 9x13 baking dish.  Spread one large can crushed pineapple, undrained, over pie filling.  Dump one box yellow cake mix over pineapple.  Pour one cup melted buttter over cake mix.  Sprinkle 3 1/2 ounces coconut over butter.  Bake at 325 degrees for one hour.

How easy is that?  No mixing.  Just dump, spread, drizzle, sprinkle.  You're done in minutes.  Waiting the hour for it to be done is the hardest part!!  It's the ultimate comfort food for me.

Warmest hungry bear hugs,

This is simple for me... thick cut homemade french fries loaded with tons of ketchup. When I get stressed I need salt.  The close second would be mashed potatos with tons of (nondairy) butter sitting next to a pile of broccoli covered in melted (nondairy) cheese. Afterwards I'd have a piece of dark chocolate to curb the sweet crave that always follows the salty crave bear_grin
Now I'm hunnnngggrrryyy!!

ewwww...Aleta, dump cake sounds yummy!!!  I'll have to give it a whirl with the wheatfree stuff and see if it works. I'm sure it would.  Cherry with chocolate would be sinful!!  YUM!!

In the wintertime . . . buttered toast dunked in hot chocolate.  MMMMMMMMMMM.  Anytime . . . kookie brittle cookies (I put up the recipe here somewhere).  Anytime . . .  a huge mug of my favorite tea - Good Earth original.

Oh yes - and peanut butter cups.

Wow,  this is great!  I love to see eveyone's comfort food.  Chloe, I haven't had lemon and sugar pancakes in ages.  I think I'm going to make some!  They are sooooo good - the absolute best.  My son likes those as well.

Even though I'm the only Canadian born one in our family, I think I should be living in the UK.   I love the food I grew up with, and no-one is left to eat it with.  My kids won't touch rice puddings, anthing with custard, suet puddings, shepherds pie etc and the other day I did fried bread with an egg, and they looked at me funny LOL!

Melissa, I think you hit the nail on the head - it takes us back to when we were children, and life was so much simpler.  We always had our big meal at noon on Sundays and then we had sandwiches in the evening, in the livingroom, while we all watched Wonderful World of Disney.  it was such a treat!
Now, everyone has their own TV and goes their separate ways. LOL!

Aleta, your Dump it Cake sounds fabulous, but hubby and daughter are allergic to pineapple, and I don't want to eat the whole cake LOL!

Carolyn,  lamb is one thing everyone in our family loves.  It's the first thing my son asks for when he comes home for a visit.

Sarah, we get BBC Canada and several PBS stations that run a lot of the British shows, and that's almost all I watch.  I love a good murder/mystery.  They've also just finished showing a series of Sea of Souls, which I also enjoyed.   I do looooove Midsomer Murders (the scenery is fabulous) and an old one they replay that I like is  Murder in Suburbia.  I also love New Tricks and Rosemary and Thyme.   I could watch murder shows all day.

                                     hugs,

                                     Brenda

Kim, I'm with you...I love "real" mac and cheese. I also love Cream of Wheat...but I have been eating oatmeal every morning lately.

Aleta, your cake sounds yummy. I am going to make it this weekend...thanks for the recipe.

Hugs, Nancy
