I forgot to ask you all a very important question. I've read here before about people having trouble with airplanes and shot-stuffed bears.
I'm getting on a plane TOMORROW and need to bring along some of my bears. They contain a pouch of bb's each.
Anybody have any advice for me in terms of should I CARRY ON or CHECK BAGGAGE with these bears?
Sorry for the late notice and thanks for any insight you can provide.
I would check them. You don't want to be stuck in the security line with the agents wanting to tear your bears open. They're getting pretty picky.
Definetly check them Shelli. Speaking from experience. When I went to Louisville, I had one bear in my carryon. I thought they were going to totally take him apart even though I explained that it had a cotter poin neck joint and bolts and lock nuts. I didn't even have steel shot (I had glass beads) but they were talking about opening up the back seam and ran it through the x-ray machine about 5 times.

Check them in, its hard enough to get through with some makeup! LOL
Ok, I went to this thread to find out what a dipwad is
I agree, check them in. Security is such a hassle these days and the risk of your luggage getting lost is very small.
Yup, put 'em in your suitcase!
I've heard of even bears in luggage arriving torn open and so it's been suggested in the past to enclose a note stating whats inside your bears. But a)don't expect the baggage people to speak english and b)don't expect them to go reading your handtags.
I traveled from IL to NH last fall with bears in my luggage that had steel shot in them and had no problems. I'd be MUCH more concerned if you were traveling all the way across the country or OUT of the country.
Have a safe trip! Send us a postcard!
Hi Shelli,
We travel all the time with bears in our luggage and have never had a problem (knock on wood). We have never taken one in our carry on as we have heard horror stories as well of people having their bears ripped open. I know one artist who took two with her in her carry on, they wanted to rip them open. She explained to them what was inside and that she was a bear artist. Luckily she had a magazine with her pic in it and an article on her bears and they did let her go through, but we always put ours in luggage. Now we ship all of our bears ahead of time (if we are doing a show) we send them directly to the hotel we are going to be staying at. If we are taking them as a gift to friends then I wrap them up in bubble wrap and put them in my suitcase.
Good luck and I love that word dipwad

Have an enjoyable safe journey.
Thanks you guys! I'll check them thru in my non-carry on bags.
Daph... I AM travelling all the way across the country. I hope that doesn't create problems.
I'll let you all know how it goes when I get back.
Thanks again for your help.
I know nothing about traveling with bears...but I do know about traveling by plane and yes they practically rip apart your luggage if they suspect anything strange....label them with as much information as possible...just to be safe. My ex likes to be sure to leave his dirty underwear on top just be annoying
especially when traveling to Europe!!! He saves it up!!!
More importantly....HAVE A GREAT TRIP. I enjoyed the East Coast the few times I visited.
Hugs,
Shantell
I know this is not bear related, but when we travel we usually wear our New Rock boots which have metal on the heels and they set the alarm off. We now take our boots off before going through the metal detectors and put them through the x-ray. Otherwise we have to take them off and go through the metal detectors all over again. Other travellers usually give us funny looks and ask why we do it, but as soon as they see our boots they just laugh at us.
I flew to Florida last week I put the shots in my suitcase and checked it in. I did not have a problem. Call them to make sure though.
Interesting Shelli, for on that flight when I was waiting for my, bag two hunters (obvious with their manly (?) hunting coats on) were standing next to me talking about how excited they were to go hunting. Next thing I see, they both are pulling off the ramp hunting riffle cases. I could say some really mean things at this point about what I was thinking. The point is, if those @!%$ hunters can have riffles on a plane, you should be fine with your shots.
I printed out the "prohibited items" list from the TSA (Transportation and Safety Administration) last night as part of this little research project.
I found out that you can indeed check rifles thru, as well as sabers and guns and even on some airlines, ammunition! But you can NOT take snow globes on an airplane in your carryon luggage. I kid you not. No snow globes as carryons. I guess they're okay to check, though.
 Snowglobes can be dangerous!
Have a safe trip Shelli, and enjoy the east coast! I love it there!!

Never EVER under estimate the snowglobe...some are even.....musical <gasp>!
Be sure to stock up on aerosol cheese wiz...that's OK!
Have FUN and STAY WARM!!!

some are even.....musical <gasp>!
OMIGOD! Say it isn't so!
All mockery aside, I get that the TSA is trying to remove dangers from liquid explosives and all. But really... a snow globe? You can bring 3 ounces of shampoo on board (or PRETEND shampoo... so long as it's just three ounces), but you can't bring a snow globe?
You can bring 3 ounces of shampoo on board (or PRETEND shampoo... so long as it's just three ounces)?
:|
Yeah...so ten terrorists can each bring 3 ounces of "shampoo" on the same flight and create thier concoctions ....hhhmmmm.
Have a great trip. I am sure you will have no problems as long as you check your bears in your luggage. I had a full suitcase that traveled from Green Bay Wisconsin to San Diego just fine.
I know a lady that slid her knitting needles alongside the sides of her glasses. They were short enough to put one on each side and go over each ear and through her hair.
Ok, I went to this thread to find out what a dipwad is
Yeah me too Sabine
SNOWGLOBES??? You have to be having a larff Shelli. SNOWGLOBES??? Nah, don't believe it. OK they are a bit tacky and i know people who collect them but SNOWGLOBES are a threat to life and limb?
Nah. Gerroff. No Way.
Is the world mental?
Penny
P.S. Shelli my dear dipwad.......what is a Dipwad?
hmmm I think a dipwad is similar to a dipstick...and probably what they use to measure the fluid level in Snowglobes
Hope you have a wonderful trip Shelli!!!
Ohhh and Jennifer...I love the story about the knitting needles!!!
Hugs &
Have a fantastic time away Shelli.

I printed out the "prohibited items" list from the TSA (Transportation and Safety Administration) ..... But you can NOT take snow globes on an airplane in your carryon luggage.
This is because they can and have explode and leak all over the place... I kid you not!
I took some aquarium fish in bags in my carryone once (for a friend - from a fish convention)... (before 911). talk about embarrassing.... water everywhere... That could have shorted out the electronics in the plane!!!!
Because of the difference in altitude... the pressure on the inside of enclosed items becomes greater than the air pressure on the outside... and things explode, leak or break. Try watching a small bag of potato chips next time - the bag expands!
awwww...Laura...fish...poor fish...and you should see the bags of potato chips at our elevation...we live at over 7500 ft...they are all puffed up...it is the air pressure thing...never thought of that one:)

When I travel on business I always take boxes of felting needles in checked luggage.
Guess what looks like a nail bomb.
Guess which (only) one of our 4 suitcases gets opened every time??
We have used the TSA locks since right after 9/11. And they're always tripped to Red , with the nice little form note inside the bag.
I once forgot the little postal scale in my tiny workbox in my purse. They looked at it on Xray 15 ways to Sunday. I couldn't explain as I didn't know what the hold-up was.
You know now that it was that little scimitar shaped one about 2" across that swings like a pendulum to register the weight. Sheeessh....
Now I know why I love Amtrak...I took my felting needles & wool...right on the train...and needle felted all the way from NM to NY & back again...without a word from anyone...accept those who sat near me or walked by...who were just soooo curious about what I was working on...god didn't make me with wings...I don't fly...
