What a ditz - I'm so friggin stressed I posted this in the Bears for sale! oops

I'm not retyping it all - here's the jist of my post

Grandson has been on three rounds of antiobotics and doctors suck - he's been scrreaming since 2;00 p.m. not stop.  He's on third round of antibiotics and has had all the pain killers he can take.  ANyone have any good remedies?  My niece said to use 3-4 drops of hydrogen peroxide followed by 3 drops of warmed oil ie mineral oil.  Anyone used it and does it work?

He's also getting his final molars and his gums are really swollen.  Could that be complicating the earache?

My daughter and I are battling flu, and are about to lose it - HELP!

                                                              Hugs,

Oh Brenda I am so sorry that you and your daughter have the flu and your grandson has an earache.
I don't really have any remedies, but just want to wish that you will soon be over this and feeling better.
I know of people who have had to have grommets put in their childrens ears - have you had him to the Doctor?
Please get well.

Warmest hugs
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

Yes, three doctors in three weeks and with stronger antiobiotics each time, with no relief - you would think they might suspect something else is complicating things, but they say "that all they can do".

Oh Brenda I feel so bad for you all.  Yes, the molars being cut could very much be affecting his ears.  Everytime we cut teeth we got bad earaches (at least that's what my mom tells us).  A little guy I watch for a friend had a bad time with his teething too..earaches, unusual crankiness and fever too.  They say adults couldn't handle the pain a baby/child feels with teeth being cut.  I know that one pain med night work for one kid and not another.  Motrin did nothing for the little guy I know, but tylenol did.  Some home remedies swear by warmth for earaches.  Some say to use a hair dryer on a warm and low setting held 15-20 inches from the head. (don't want to blow air into the ear, but use the dry warmth).  If it is his gums though and teething you would think cooling it down would help him more (??)..numbing it, like with popsicles or something.
I hope someone can give you something to ease his pain bear_sad   Poor little guy.

Hey Brenda, having 5 kids of my own, I feel your pain! I quickly did an on-line search for home remedies and this is a little of what i have found (I have not tried any of these!!!)

If you puncture a piece of garlic and pour the juice in the ear it will help to take the pain away. Garlic has a natural antibiotic, so use it, and see if it helps. (I saw this on several sites)

Grind a few Holy basil leaves and extract some juice. Apply 2 drops inside the ear.

Boil 3-4 cloves of Garlic in some water. Mash them and add a pinch of salt. Wrap this poultice in a flannel or woolen cloth and place on the aching ear.

Put few drops of hydrogen peroxide in the aching ear.

heat a cup of salt in a frying pan until all the granules are hot; pour the heated salt into a sock and knot the end; test the warmth of the sock to make sure it's not hot enough to burn the skin; hold the sock against the painful ear.

This is copy and pasted from an article I was reading.....this is NOT my home remedy, but i do hope you find some of these helpful.

1. I went and got my garlic oil.

I made this by crushing a bulb of garlic and putting it in a small jar (4 ounces or even a baby food jar). I then filled that jar with olive oil to the top and let it sit. If you have an emergency, you could use some in about an hour after you get it going. Other wise, let it sit a day or more.

2. I warmed up the oil a little past room temperature.

3. I got a dropper and applied 2-3 drops in the affected ear. I put a little cotton on his ear. You can plug it in or tape a cotton ball on the ear.

4. I Made sure he was laying down for 15-20 minutes. I just put a movie on for him to watch.

You can apply this up to 4 times throughout the day. Any left over oil should be refrigerated.

Ear ache remedy variations…

In the above case, I used half garlic and half St. Johnswort Oil (Hypericum perforatum).

(I could have also used Mullein oil (Verbascum thapsus), but I was out at the time. Mullein flower oil is a very popular ear ache remedy.)

I also added 3 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) into the oil and mixed it in. Click for more on GSE.

I hope that you find one of these to work for your little sweetie....from what I was reading, it seems garlic and peroxide seem to be the most common home remedies.

BIG Bear Hugs and well wishes to you Brenda!

If he is old enough to not rub it in his eyes, put vicks vapor rub all over his neck and ear, then use low low heat. If he would put it in his eyes, just use a warm wash cloth, with cotton in his ear , I used batting one time when I didn't have any cotton balls. keeping the sound out seems to make it feel better. Also you can buy ear drop oil , you warm it (make sure not hot)  then put a few drops in , then put cotton ball in, followed by warm wash rag or heating pad.  I have one friend swear by warming olive oil and putting a few drops of that in, followed by cotton and warmth.

Boy I sure feel for you guys, I hope you all are better soon.

Brenda from someone who suffered tremendously with ear problems growing (and I still do to this day).  I do remember my mother heating up some mineral oil just slightly warm and putting a couple of drops in my ear.  Also adding heat to is does make if feel so much better and by all means put a cotton ball in the ear, that alone seemed to help me as it cut the noise level.  Try and just get him to lay down watching TV or something for awhile and keep him quiet ( I know easier said than done).  I hope it gets better for him and hope you and your daughter are feeling better as well.

Hi Brenda,

I'm sorry to hear you have the flu and your poor grandson is going through all of this pain.

If he is cutting his molars then you need to treat both problems. One of the things you can do is provide warmth for the ear. You can make a small heating pack by taking some uncooked regular white rice and wrap it up in some fabric then put it in the microwave to warm it. Heat it in 30 second increments until it is just warm, too long and you will burn it. I just watched a show on these on the DIY channel, they used rosemary and lavender in the bags but you could leave that out. Here is the link: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cr_natura … 02,00.html

For the molars I would suggest if you have any cloves in the house grind them up and rub them on the gums. If you don't have any cloves, do you have any chamomile tea. You can brew up the tea, let the bag cool and then rub that on his gums.

Wishing you feel better soon and that your grandson finds some relief.

Aw, poor kid!  bear_cry

Can't help with the earache itself, but if he suffers from allergies... which may have caused or contributed to the earache in the first place... make sure you are treating the allergies as well.  A good anti-histamine, and even a nasal spray may help to cut back on extra congestion and pressure in his head.

Good luck to all of you

Thanks everyone for the responses and I will read and store every one.  This is quick - I'm up trying to get some breathing relief, waiting for my sinutab to kick in.  About half an hour after I posted, my daughter finally gave me permission to try the hydrogen peroxide/warm oil.  I feel silly saying "it was a miracle", but honest to god, I only put in two drops of hydrogen peroxide and Corson started to cry even harder so I stopped, but all of a sudden he sat bolt upright and said "where it go" and that was it -EARACHE WAS GONE.  I never even got to the warm oil!  He was almost giddy and was jumping around playing within minutes.  We got him to bed within the hour and he has been sleeping like a baby ever since.  WHAT A RELIEF!  I will never be without this remedy in the house. GOOD NIGHT!

  I'm so glad the peroxide remedy worked for you Brenda!  My mom always did this for my sister and I (along with heat) and I've used it too for my boys.  Works like a charm! bear_thumb

Oh my GOSH Brenda!  bear_shocked   The poor little guy... SO GLAD to hear that the hydrogen peroxide worked!  My Mom did that for us many times when my brother and I were little.  I've used it several times on my own wee ones as well.  It always seems to do the trick!
It's SO hard to take care of little one's when you are under the weather as well.... Hope you ALL feel better soon!

..just got to this one, but wanted to add my two cents---my mother, to help earaches and partially I think to keep us quiet, would warm a capful of the hydrogen peroxide in the microwave, and then we would lie down on the couch and she'd pour it in, cover it with a cotton ball, and we would let it sit there until all the fizzing was gone or nearly gone.  It's an interesting and different feeling, I think it gets kids to focus on something other than the pain, and then it warms the ear and kills the infection inside it.

Am very happy that your little tyke was much better after it, Brenda.  Will have to try the drops if my little guy starts pulling at his ear---I don't think he'd lie down on the couch for the fizzing, seeing as he's 22 months!

Thanks everyone!  I am going to print off the different remedies and start keeping a binder of home remedies like these ones.  On one hand, I'm thrilled to see that hydrogen peroxide is such a well known remedy, but frustrated that the doctors won't ever let you know about them.  It would have saved Corson from sooooo much pain. He slept through the night until 7:00 a.m.

We have figured out that the ear problem is definitely correlated with teething.  He is just turned three, but is getting some molars and his back gums are extremely swollen which in turn seems to be affecting his ears.  This morning his other ear was aching and we know this one is not infected, as the doctor looked at it yesterday.  Now, I'm wondering if he really needs the antibiotics at all, if we can treat both his ears and teeth naturally.  We are going to go to the health food store, and get some chamomile oil for his cheeks, which are scarlet, and see what else they recommend, along with some freezies for him to chew on to keep the swelling down.  We're hoping if we can control his teeth symptoms, we can control his earaches.  Thanks for all the help and it means a lot to know so many people care.

                                        hugs,

                                        Brenda
