Police in Taiwan were forced to shoot a crocodile after it bit off the arm of the zoo veterinarian treating it, an official said on Wednesday.
Dramatic television footage showed a police officer firing on the animal to wrest the severed limb from its jaws.
Chang Po-yu, 38, from the southern Kaohsiung city's Shou Shan Zoo, was injecting the sick crocodile with anaesthetic when it attacked him.

I just hope the poor guy does better than the crock did.

shock! The poor vet, I guess that's his career over. I can't believe he was allowed to inject the croc, without the croc's jaws being taped shut and the croc pinned down! How completly tragic.

It almost doesn't look real - other than having been ripped off, the arm looks relatively undamaged.

Here's the BBC news report on it.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-p … 551185.stm

I admit that I was very bad and had a little chuckle when I read this bit..... 'After his operation, Mr Chang was seen on television waving and smiling to reporters from his hospital bed.' ......I wondered which arm he used!  bear_whistle

A quote from the link Gemma sent:

"It (the croc) probably was shocked, and opened its mouth to let go of the limb," zoo official Chen Po-tsun was quoted as saying.

Duh...the croc was shocked...what about that poor man...

Seems like they would have better procedures for sedating than sticking your arm through a fence to give the croc a tranquilizer.

Ewwwwie

with his friends voicing concern about how soon he would be able to play the piano.

With friends like that, who needs enemies??

Actually, I'm relieved and amazed the surgeons were able to reatttach the limb for him ~ must've been some pretty good meds for him to be happily waving at the cameras  :photo:

As for the proceedure...well, most people don't realize it, but even sedated the vets DO have to be careful.  Various species react differently to the anesthetics, and if the animal is already sick, or scared, the adrenaline kicks in....and the sedatives don't work so well.

I have my fingers crossed this fellow does get to keep his arm and his career!  Thankfully his sense of humor seems intact  bear_happy

WOW!  Is that for real!?  That's a heck of a photo.  I guess Tami won't be able to use it for "cute animal pic of the day".  How about "shocking animal pic of the day"?   That's amazing.... and very sad situation on both sides.

OK I know this sounds completely unfeeling, but the arm looks fake so that is how I am justifying what I am about to say, I swear the croc looks like he's saying
"Hey let me give you a hand with that"

I aim to please!

I just feel really bad that the bad decisions of humans to not tape the crocs mouth, ended up getting the croc killed. And they call us the thinking animal, hmmm go figure

bear_shocked  bear_shocked YIKES!!!  Well of course I looked Jane....you got my curiosity going with "don't look if you're easily shocked"! bear_tongue    Wow....what an awful thing to have happened.  To both the vet and the croc.  bear_sad  So sad they had to shoot the animal.......as was already said, the croc's jaws should have been taped first before anyone tried to treat him.  Suppose that mistake will be made again?  Somehow I bet it won't!! bear_wacko I am glad for the vet that the docs were able to reattach his arm.  Very lucky man indeed.......

As for you two, Gemma and Jodi................. your're killing me here!!!

Gemma too bad we couldn't get together over a drink, maybe it's good we can't I bet we would be kicked out for laughing too hard.

Ok here is the kind of humor I am always around , my son who is 20 and in college came home from work with a big bandage on his finger, I asked him if he cut it at work, he looks at me really weird and I go "What have you done?!"
he unwraps the bandage and this is what he shows me
0all.jpg

OMGosh he got a mustache tatoo on his finger, I almost faint and ask , when did you do it? , his exact words were "I did it during break"  my response "What, was the vending machine out of Doritos?!!!!!!!"  It is on his shaking hand and everytime he eats with us I see it.  He is such a great kid , never in his 20 years did he drink or do anything illegal and he graduated 7th in him class,  so I have a hard time getting too upset, I raised him to find humor in life so what could I expect. The only good thing iis he is the head writer for a comedy show on campus and that is the career he is pursuing, good thing, because my dream of him being president one day quickly disappeared that day.
I can now laugh at this
