Chaska, MinnesotaI have read posts from so many of you about the bridge collapsing here in Minneapolis. I work 20 minutes from where the bridge collapsed. Many of our employees were traveling on that bridge going home. It happened during traffic hour. We understand there a few near misses for some of our folks. One of my coworkers called his son when we heard about it and we found out the son had just crossed the bridge an hour before it collapsed.
I can tell you, the whole country has been so supportive of us Minnesotans. It is very appreciated. The death toll is at five. There may be less missing than expected. To look at this awful tragedy, I would say there were many miracles happened that Wednesday afternoon.
What was really good to see, was bystanders immediately jumping in the river to rescue people and helping those injured. These ordinary citizens who did not think of themselves but of others... The first responders (fire and police personnel) praised those who did this for it saved many lives until they could get on the scene. I heard one newsperson on CNN say "when something like this this happening, most people would be running to get out of harms way but the people of Minnesota ran to the bridge to help. They did not run away...remarkable...".
There are many delays in getting to work....But people here are pulling together. To help with driving, they have buses taking alternative routes to get people where they need to go and cut down on traffic. Amazing planning in such a short period of time.

As a person who lived in Minnesota most of my life I am certainly relating to this tradegy. I grew up in the Minneapolis area (Hopkins) and lived and taught school up in Interntaional Falls. until moving to CO in 1989. My middle son is now attending the U of MN getting his doctorate and crosses that bridge daily. I was very relieved to hear his voice answer his phone yesterday and hear he was Ok.... Thinking of all you Minnesotans..... Janet

what a tragedy! Terrible to know, that this could have been prevented.
Strange coincidance: exactly that day 31 years ago a bridge collapsed in Vienna, and luckily only 1 person got killed, because it collapsed during the night. During the day 18.000 cars per hour were crossing it.
My thoughts are with those who lost a loved one…
Chaska, MinnesotaStella: yes it is a tragedy! People are still in shock. The good news is, they already have a plan to have the bridge up and functional in 18 months!! The bad news is, there are hints our taxes may go up!!! Not fond of that idea. But, it is a great state to live in....
