Just received message from eBay:

From 21 May you must offer PayPal on all your listings as well as currently permitted payment methods.

From 17 June you will only be able to offer PayPal on your listings and pay on pick up (i.e.paid for when picking up the item).

Pay on pick up can only be offered in conjunction with PayPal.

No other payment methods will be permitted.

 They sound more like a dictatorship every day!

I find this interesting as I was told by Ebay that as I had joined up in 2006 they would allow me to accept other payment methods as Pay Pal can only take funds from SA and not make payments into SA accounts- rules and regulations.

Therefore PayPal cannot be my main payment source and I was not able to register via Ebay USA but could register via Ebay UK.

As yet I have not had any of these emails dictating PayPal rules.

Hi Sandi,
I only have a minute - desperately trying to get packed for holidays on Friday.  Honestly, this is just the tip of the iceberg, so get ready for more changes.  Apparently there will be more changes this year than in all the years Ebay has been operating so far!

                                    hugs,

Just read this announcement on another forum (caravanning).

Out of the 3 methods of payment for bears, Pay-pal for me is the one most frequently used... I really can't see a problem with this, if I need the money urgently, funds in my pay-pal account can be transferred to my bank account, yes for a fee.

But lets get realistic here, e-bay like banks is a business not a free service and so I think one can expect that there will be changes and charges to rear their ugly head from time to time..

The money I get from my bears is not for putting food on the table but allows me to buy more bear stuff or the occasional other luxury stuff...pin money I suppose...

I like using PayPal for my transactions too Denise...but I don't enjoy being told
"No other payment methods will be permitted"
when it's more convenient at times, for me to accept direct deposits into my bank account from Australian bidders.

And I am fed up with "big business" erroding my freedom of choice.

I will definately excercise my freedom of choice, while I still have some left, by taking my business elsewhere, where I can choose my method of payment.

Thats the great thing that we can do, be free to make choices.  I guess if we look hard enough there are alternatives that suit some but not all.

Unfortunately big business is here to stay, and its all about making a profit, but hey don't we bear makers like to make a profit...I know most of us are not BIG business, but we do like to come out ahead when we sell any of our little critters.
It may sound like I am sticking up for the big profit makers far from it.

Its all about choices and choosing whatever it may be that suits us.
Be it lifes choices or selling stuff choices..

Maybe, craft markets, bear shows websites can be the other alternative for selling our craft.  Even here, on TT. How many of us have sold a bear from this site, TT doesn't take a percentage.

Choose what works for you....

It's the principal of it all, Denise.

eBay has been around how long now? And all of a sudden the rules are REALLY changing. They are now TELLING us (and many who do indeed run full-time businesses that do pay the bills on eBay) HOW to run our business. Yes, over the years many have opened up 'businesses' on eBay, paid all the big fees to do it, and THAT is how they keep their family fed and a roof over their head. And eBay encouraged these sellers by offering the option of opening a store, rewarding power-sellers, etc. To go and make the huge changes they've been making that affect EVERYONE is NOT good business practice nor is it fair. The rest of the economy is aleady suffering enough and now eBay seems to feel the need to do their part to add insult to injury.

Like Sandi said, they are now making sure they don't miss a single opportunity to make money. They got so big and popular and eBay realized all the areas they could be gaining more profit from. So now they are going and changing all the rules to benefit THEM. How do any of these changes truly and honestly benefit the sellers or buyers? It's only the owners of eBay who I see really profitting from these changes. Greed is such an ugly thing.

I only accept PayPal on eBay too. We don't have the option of bank transfers in the states and personal checks seem to bounce a lot around here. PayPal is safe and easy. BUT.... just like we have choices of WHERE we do business it's important to have choices of HOW we do business. Bank transfers or other means of payment may work better for some sellers. Why sell something if you aren't going to get paid? There are plenty of people out there who still won't use PayPal..... so they are essentially not welcome on eBay anymore?

Wow, that is just annoying.. I have a merchant account for visa and mc that I use.. and many of my customers pay with personal cheques or money orders. I don't list much on ebay as it is but I think I will spend more time using my website and shows. Why should ebay tell us how a customer can pay for things?

Hugs,
Melanie

Not happy, complain and then  find an alternative. If enough people complain as these changes are going to effect everyone, you don't know what will happen..

Are there anymore auction sites available... Bid4Bears is one I can think of for the bear community..

Might have a google and see how many I can find...

You almost wouldn't mind so  much if ebay really controlled their "shop" as such but for all these fees they are instigating they still don't get rid of their "shonky" traders and tend to ignore you if you report one. Also the feedback system still stinks and they refuse to intervene for that too!  What do they actually do for all the fees they are now getting.

I have reported a number of illegal transactions and traders only to see them continue for weeks, or still be trading now, after being reported to e-bay. Although after reporting one to our federal authorities they eventually took action and arrested and prosecuted him......but ebay still let him trade and I know for a fact the federal authorities told them his actions were illegal and they would soon be arresting him.

The other thing that is happening is that paypal will hold the money until buyers give a positive feedback so it can take up to 3 weeks before you see any money.  That I have trouble with.
Sellers are unable to give negative feedback and this is another cause for concern.  I use Paypal but I really dislike being told what I can and can't do.  What about people who don't want to use paypal to buy, who don't have an account with them?
Direct deposit is cheap and easy for us in Aussie and I do this with many things.
It contravenes quite a few trade practices in Australia and there are many people who are going to the ACCC (trading group meant to protect us).
I don't see how it is going to stop them though.
In Australia you could try selling on Bid4Bears, Bearpile and Oztion.  I'm sure there are others too it's just getting the word out.

yes I was just thinking that too. I have just sold a heap of my fathers stuff on e-bay and of the 10 things I sold about half left feedback.........also I refuse to leave feedback in some instances. Mow won't that be a hoot if the sller annoys you.....refuse to leave feedback and know they won't get tehir money........NOT!!
