Ebay had announced in Australia that they were going to introduce "Paypal" only method of payment. No longer could you pay by direct deposit or postage. Last night our ACCC (govt dept) announced that they were rejecting the application for Ebay to trade this way as it was not competitive and would give ebay to much market power as they own Paypal.
For once the governement departments used their brains.....there is hope yet!!
 'bout time someone made a stance like this!
"The payment policy, which eBay is expected to enforce across its sites worldwide, required customers selling goods on eBay in Australia to offer PayPal as a form of payment from May 21 and PayPal or cash on delivery only from June 17.
Once the policy was in force, direct deposits, personal cheques and money orders would be forbidden."
I think ebay's officially jumped the shark

Well they have officially been told a big resounding NO here in Australia. I have noticed that several sellers her have on therir sites that you contact them direct if "difficulties" with paypal payment occurred. In other words email us for alternatives.
Read this in the local paper, good news..is it official or do we wait for e-bay to let us know if previous payments used are accepted now???????
I also like the fact that in Australia, there is truth in advertising, at least it was about 10 years ago. A friend from Australia was visiting in Ohio and we went to a local craft store. There was a ribbon flower kit with one of those logos "AS SEEN ON TV" I told her, don't believe what you read...she was ASTOUNDED!! Said it's not that way in her country! Ahhh, if only they would do that here!

That is good news Sandra!
I received an email this morning telling me how they are going to be charging extra for buyers making payments using their credit card ... there were several confusing new twists on the theme, but basically, I think it just means it will probably cost more to use Ebay for purchases in many cases.
I told her, don't believe what you read...she was ASTOUNDED!! Said it's not that way in her country!
At times our Govt Dept can be as wimpy as the next but when it comes to trading or selling they can be quite tough. If you advertise something or that an item is such and such or will do a certain thing you have to able to back it up or prove that it can or be prepared to face a legal court. If you are proved incorrect a rather large fine is the minumum and jail time the maximum. And don't even touch the media circus your name will probably be dragged through.
We don't particularly like be conned or ripped off in Australia..
We sort of discussed this subject when Ted Menten visited Australia some years ago.......he was amazed at the technical quality of even our novice bear makers here and the standards set for our retail etc......as I said to him "We Aussies expect to get what we pay for and don't expect anything less than what is described."
And as it shows with Ebay........our demands for "a fair go" (which is the Aussie way of life) do sometimes win out!!
I don't know if any other Canadian's have run into this but some American eBay's are no longer accepting Paypal payments from Canadian...something about the fees being too high. I've had this happen on eBay and also on a web site that accepted Paypal, just not Canadian Paypal. Very annoying.
