I am looking to plan a motorcycle trip for my hubby and myself (perhaps a friend or two) to Newfoundland for next summer......any Canadians live there, been there, or anyone tell me ways to get there, what to do, weather for July, August or Septemenber, all that kind of stuff one needs while planning a trip. I presume we would go to Portland, ME, hop on the ferry to Nova Scotia, drive across and catch the ferry to Newfoundland.........looks like the shortest way to go.

We went in July and camped, took the ferry across at Port aux Basque and drove across the island stopping here and there. We went to Anse aux Meadows to see the Viking settlement and stopped at several lovely Prov Parks here and there. The people in Nfld are marvellous. The weather, on the other hand, was not so marvellous. Lots of rain and coolish temps, and there was no heater on in the ocean. :crackup:

Thanks Marion............hmmm, no heaters on the bikes either......I guess long johns, rainsuits and leathers are in order! 
Hi Ellen, I agree with Marion that Newfies are the friendlies folks ever. Some have a great dialect that can be a bit hard to understand at first though LOL.
I went to Newfoundland years ago (in July) and quickly understood why it is refered to as "The Rock". It is a very rocky countryside, but beautiful along the water. We also took the boat to Port Aux Basque and travelled to St. John's . Be sure to visit Signal Hill and the great little villages along the way. I agree the weather was rather damp, and I have nasty memories of that rough boat ride- Ugh. If you get motion sickness at all , take something for it before hand. It can be a long ride if the ocean is rough, or gorgeous if not.
You'll have to take in some of the traditional Newfie quisine-cod tongues, scruncheons, fish & brews or screech .
I'm sure you'll find it a beautiful, unique place. Just watch out for the moose while biking!
MerBear OriginalsEllen - skip the screech! They don't actually drink the stuff themselves - it's just for the tourists. Now if you do like rum though get London Dock - that's the good stuff!
I remember getting cod tongues and cooking them for supper one night. I made sure there was a really good dessert to make sure the kids ate their supper first. Somehow or other none of them made it to my plate 
I ditto Tammy with visiting the little villages - they are very colourful and pleasant places (such as Dildo) and yes, the Newfies do speak a different 'version' of English. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Hearts Ease BearsEllen i took a trip there many moons ago in july..rained the whole time except for one day..but it was beautiful country! we drove to Bar harbor and caught the st johns ferry because of the expense. Cape Bretton state park was stunning! as was a beach along that trail..it had red jelly fish in the water! way cool! we went to the anne of green gables house..and some beautiful floral gardens! we laughed alot that when we complained about the rain the locals asked "what rain?" every time! the ferry was neat..ecxept it fogged in to the rail as soon as we left port! and stayed that way the whole way! i will NEVER get on a tour bus in that area after watchingthem drive that route! mama so they go fast! straight down and around ..we didnt even see the tail lights of the one in front of us! ive always wanted to go backin the fall..sept is supposed to be best..they will send you free literature! deb

Used to tour South Africa extensively. Love it. One trip we didnt have waterproof gloves or boots so were in rain suits with plastic bags over our boots, hands in washing up gloves over our leather gloves ( i couldnt even get diva pink so had to settle for yellow). Got soaked to the skin and ended up in a really nice town with a pub where they plied us with sherry and soup next to a roaring fire.... oh what a day that was. We never used to plan a route. Head in a general direction and stop when we felt like it. Stayed in some amazing places, met stunning people and took 1000's of photos off the back of the bike. Our bike is being baby sat by really good friends who take it for a ride on the weekends and their bike and ours get washed. Better than being in storage. But we should be going back for a month in January and all we want to do is RIDE. Family spread over SA so going to tour around to see them. Cant wait. Pack a bag with some clothes and bear stuff and hit the road
