I don't know how many of you TTers make Gingerbread Houses. I never did until a few years ago when my Girl Scouts decided they wanted to enter the TAUNY (traditional arts in upstate new york) competetion. They have entered something for the past 4 or 5 years. Last year they won 1st place for their entry, and this year they won 1st place again for their lean-to entry. Since we are Girl Scouts, and live near the Adirondack Park where there are a lot of lean-tos, that is what the girls decided to do. The girls did most of the work, I made the ginerbread parts, they put it together.
The cots are made from pretzels (legs) sugar wafers, chocolate for the bed, and the sleeping bag is a piece of fruit Roll-up. The ground is grated gingerbread, coconut and confectionary sugar. the campfire is sugar babies, pretzels and fruit roll ups.
The girls are all 16 years old and this is their 5th year with me.

They did a wonderful job! My daughter and I sometimes make one. Her favorite one was what I called the gingerbread shanty. We didn't use royal icing, we used canned frosting. Canned frosting doesn't get hard like royal icing so of course the "house" fell apart (thus a "shanty"). But Jen said it tasted the best LOL!
Have not seen any here in SA, but they are very appealing. Thanks for sharing.

I entered my gingerbread Lighthouse Church last year with the local paper, got second place. But that was fine because the prize was a $200.00 set of cookware, which I needed desperately!

Benson BearsI Love the Log cabin! Many years ago, (way too many that I want to remember!), I made a very traditional gingerbread house every year. They always looked so lovely on the sideboard, until my brothers and nephew hoed into them then they took on the look of an earth quake disaster! 
Maybe when my grandson is older I will have another go.....

Since this Lean-To Log Cabin is on display in a public place for a month, we will not be eating it! I probably won't even pick it up, I will let them take care of it. I love looking at them, but besides looking pretty, what are they for? At least bears you can hug and cuddle with! :crackup:
