I have 6 friend requests and I haven't a clue who any of them are! Why would people request to be a friend from a stranger? I see that we have soms friends in common and I think some of them may be artists or collectors, but I don't get it. Now, I had a lovely email from one lady asking about my bears and identifying herself as a collector and asking to be friends, and I had no problem with that, but I don't know what to do about the others. My gut tells me to ignore them, but maybe I'll be ticking off collectors? Anyone else had the same problem?
hugs,
Brenda
Hi Brenda!
You've probably already done this but I'll ask anyway...Did you click on their name and look at their profile? If they request you as a friend, you have 30 days to peruse their profile. That always gives me a clue. I have to say, many TT'ers names I don't recognize because Facebook gives a last name or even a maiden name. So many TT'ers are first name only or business names. I mean really, how many people know my last name? If I had a normal first name like Linda, how would you know to add me unless you look at my profile. If we have 37 friends in common I'm most likely from TT or high school. If we only have one friend in common, I do a little more digging.
Some people are strictly looking for networking to get their names or businesses out there. I've had a few of those. Ignore. Unless I've done business with them and want to continue....ignore button. I don't want every Tom, Dick and Harry on my friend list.
That's about all I know....or remember...it's 11:35pm and I've been working all day to reorganize my studio. Something is bound to slip through the cracks of my "overwhelmed with stuff" brain.
Warmest bear hugs,
Aleta
Aleta,
Yep, looked at both names and profiles - I know one is a bear artist but not a member of TT and I don't recognize the name at all, so I haven't accepted them.
hugs,
Brenda
I've had a few requests from people with a few friends in common with me... usually bear artists... and they often turn out to be collectors... one was forever posting obnoxious stuff on their page and never commented when I posted bear photos so I removed them. Another has turned out to be the nicest woman and very artistic in other ways, its been fun seeing her work and getting to know her a bit!
I don't mind unfamiliar people being friends but the second they either post something inappropriate on my wall or their postings get to driving me nuts I delete them!
Its the old classmates from high school that were too snobby to speak to me back then that suddenly want to be my friend now that I ignore!
Twitter on the other hand... I've had 4 people in the last week 'follow' me who have turned out to be [INVALID] star wannabees! DELETE!
Thanks Daphne - I guess I'll go back through them and add a few and monitor to see what happens. I guess I never thought about deleting them - that's easy enough.
hugs,
Brendat
Being new to FB, I appreciate this advice, too. I've not wanted to offend anyone but then I do find some people who just seem to want to be on everyone's friend page.
Hi Brenda,
You are not having local elections in the near future are you?
Yesterday I discovered (on the news !) that local politicians are using Facebook to get extra votes. In June we are having local elections and politicians are using Facebook to make "friends" with the voters.
Apparently, the more friends you have, the more popular you are as a politician and the more votes you will get !
The politicians who weren't on Facebook frankly admitted that they were forced to use this medium, because everyone else is doing it.
I find it a little nauseating ; but thank heavens I am not a politician.
Hugs,
Peter
ive had a few lately too..and peoples pets lol..i just click ignore if i don't know them..if it did turn out to be someone i know, they would just reapply and include a message
Kerrilyn
Hi Peter,
No, were aren't having elections here, and if I found politicians doing this on my page, it would definitely STOP me from voting for them. I really like to know facts and platforms etc before I vote and hitting me up on Facebook would definitely turn me off LOL!
Kerrilyn, thanks for your input - being new to facebook, and actually not liking it all that much, I really wasn't sure what to do.
hugs,
Brenda
Brenda , you dont have a problem. Befriend who ever you wish. It is after all 'your' Face book. Noone will be offended if you click IGNORE. I do it everyday.
People take on 'friends' for game applications.
Wendy
Daphne you are so right, it's the people from my past who find me and want to be my friend
. Why on earth do you want to be my friend now when you didn't want to be all those many yrs ago.
Brend I do request from other artist that I don't know, some I approve some I don't. But as Daphne said you can always delete them . I have deleted a few who posted stuff that I did not agree with that was against my beliefs.
DAPHNE GO AND FEED YOUR DOG ON FB, THE POOR THING IS STARVING TO DEATH

Dang it! Didn't I tell you that would happen? I hoped you'd feed him for me! Poor Kaiser. OK, OK, I'll go feed him... if I can find him!! That's the problem-I can never find the apps where I create my pets.
While you are there Daph, can you feed mine?...........do they still exist after an appl has been deleted?
LOL!! I have enough to do feeding my 5 real dogs... and 2 in separate 'dining rooms'
Hey Brenda,
I run into the same thing and often wonder just how forgetful I am, because I don't recognize lots of the names of people who want to friend me! But I figure they're collectors or customers or bear artists peers or ATC friends who I know by screen names or PayPal names, and not by their real names. So if it seems like we have a lot of friends in common I usually just "add" the ones who request me and then if they turn out to be not-what-they-seemed, I can delete them easily enough. I figure, better that way, than accidentally ignoring someone I really care about or want to know better, because I don't immediately recognize their name.
I wish I could remember the name of every customer, every Teddy Talker, every person I've exchanged correspondence with online. But I just can't. Probably because I'm such a visual person. If I have a face to put with the name, I'm pretty good about it. Even better if we end up meeting in person and I can REALLY get to associate the name with the face. But if it's just a name that passes through my inbox or a forum I visit or even my PayPal account, it just doesn't "stick."
Long story short (or... long... :))... I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt on FB. It's a fun place to get to know a different side of people. I rather enjoy it when I can carve out some time to visit.
See you there!
Thanks Shel! I'm going try that and see how it goes - I didn't realize it was so easy to delete people. That makes me feel a little easier about adding strangers. Have a super Easter weekend!
hugs,
Brenda
...........I wish I could remember the name of every customer, every Teddy Talker, every person I've exchanged correspondence with online. But I just can't. Probably because I'm such a visual person. ........
I know what you mean Shelli! If I see the TT avatar... THEN I know who it is
Also Brenda, sometimes bear people who have not been on TT are finding bear people on Facebook. I've had several new FB friends that fit that category!
Yes Daphne you did say that you would forget   . I always book mark my apps so I know where they are, I don't have to many so it's easy for me to keep track.
hugs
Shane
Interesting reading, thanks everyone! I popped in to see what you all thought about Facebook after deciding to set up an 'All Bear' profile - with an 'if you can't beat them, join them' kind of thinking! So far I'm a 'Billy no-mates' so haven't had to ignore or delete anyone!
I won't have time to keep a daily presence because of my other commitments, but thought it might be useful to have my bears put in an appearance from time to time. I'd be interested to know if anyone has found Facebook too time consuming?! I have a separate account for family, which I've found great for keeping in touch with those closest too me, but I don't want to incorporate my teddy bear world into that.
There are so many outlets available on the internet now, I guess it's becoming very important to pick what suits your requirements best ... and with care.
Paula, FB is incredibly time consuming if you let it be! But there is no where else I can go on the internet and be connected with so many bear people, friends and family all at the same time! It's eliminated the need for emailing so many to 'catch up' and has been a great way to get to know TTers and other bear people who are guarded when they are here. I've gained new customers on FB too! Friends from long ago that I've gotten back in touch with..... bear collectors and artists have found me through one of the many bear groups on FB... definitely a good marketing tool. I've thought of creating an account for the bears but then I'm not so sure I could keep up with two and my blog and the guild and TT and twitter and.....
It does all get to be a bit overwhelming doesn't it!! If you can find the time I think it's a good idea to try as many marketing outlets as possible and see what works and what doesn't for YOU!
Paula,
I was also a Facebook-resistor, but now that I'm there, I really don't find it to be time-consuming. It's nice to feel as if I'm "in touch" with old friends, and it's a VERY quick and easy way to share photos. As for the apps and other features of the site, I just don't use them.
Becky
Paula,
I don't spend a lot of time on Facebook, and I have kept if for "bear people" rather than family. I do a quick check of Status updates once a day or so and thats pretty much it. I don't do any of the games or other extras - I just don't enjoy that part of it. Too many other things to do.
hugs,
Brenda
I LOVE FB. Its a great place to meet people. I have gotten to know a lot of bear people and other artist that I would never have met on TT or other beary forums. I've found playing the odd game is a good way to connect with people from other countries and get to know them.
FB has absolute heaps to offer as well as showcasing your new bears. I check in with FB before I do anything else.
I dont Twitter. I just never liked the idea that I would be considered a 'TWIT'.
Just remember...FB is a ww networking site. It is what you want it to be.
Aaaarrrgghh! FB is too addictive!!! Lots of fun tho', although I don't befriend anyone that I don't know personally or through bear avenues. I joined originally to keep in touch with my brother in Tasmania and my sister who works on a cruise ship overseas, but would you believe it, they hardly even use it! How ironical is that???
Marg
Ditto what Daphne said lol You summed it up so nicely . Welcome Paula
And Aleta, I never knew I could check out a profile before I accept a friend request! I basically accept anyone who I know is teddy bear related
