I have to ask -- what's the point of this meta qustion?  Sure, I appreciate you're going to get a list of countries and/or towns therein, but other than the subjective answer. what is it going to tell you?  For instance, my answer is "England" -- but I am biased.  Others might say Germany, due to the good health care, etc.

I just wonder if there's a specific reason why you're asking, and if asking *that* question might get you a better set of opinions.  :)

Hi Susan!

This is a pretty hard question to answer. We do not know enough about you and your tastes to give the best answers.
How far are you ready to go? Stay in Europe or go further?

You have to worry about the value of your money in your new country.

If you chose Great Britain, I know life in England can be pretty expensive and accomodation is super expensive : now maybe not everywhere, better ask British persons. You have to ask yourslef if you will bear well very different temperatures? Great Britain is not as hot and sunny as Portugal.

Now if you are ready to go very far, why not try countries like Australia or New Zeland?

But really it is hard to suggest you places. Tell us what you need to feel well, what you are after, what you really dislike, ... Help us helping you!!!! Do you prefer living in the countryside or inside a big town?

Beary hugs,
Sophie.

Hi Susan,

This is a very tough question indeed and I agree with Sophie : we don't know enough about you to make reasonable suggestions.

For instance :
Where are your roots (where did you grow up)?
Is finding suitable work important for your partner or yourself?
Do you want to buy a property or rent?
Do you want to live in a big city or in the countryside?
....

You still look very young on your avatar  bear_wub , so I can't imagine that you're ready to settle down in front of the TV all day. So what are your dreams and wishes for your further?

Hugs,

I suggest you do an internet search re: which countries rate highest in the qualities of life you are looking for. Here in the USA, every year they post the top 10 best cities to live in and why. So I think looking around for that may help.   Make sure you visit the area several times before deciding....Good luck and let us know where you settle down...

Deciding where to move was a process that took us quite some time.  When we decided to think about retiring we first went to the internet and checked out several states (we live in the USA) then we visited areas that we pulled from the internet.  We did this several times, staying a few days in each area.  We would look at the tax base, housing costs, shopping and costs of food, and the availability of doctors and hospitals.  The weather was another factor we checked on as for when you get older a drier sunnier climate helps keep the old bones from hurting as much.  bear_grin

Good luck on your search and I hope you find a place that you will be happy and comfortable in.

Susan, I moved to the Pacific Northwest from New York City.  That was over 30 years ago and I still love it here.
I wanted a moderate climate and to be close to the ocean and mountains.  I'm in love with the outdoors.  The Northwest had what I wanted.
I agree with the others in asking..What do you want from where you live, or will live?

Hi Guys didnt mean to make it difficult.. heres abrief outline.

my husband & i are english, we left our full time jobs in the uk (builder and manager of boots the chemist) about 6 years ago to work in other countries teaching kitesurfing, so we have lived in St Lucia, Dominican Replublic, Egypt and now portugal.

we are back to our old jobs here, my husbnd building and i have gone back to my old work as a body therapist we also do teach kitesurfing in the summer.
we love this country but it is still difficult to live here and in countries like this , so we have decided to move before we get to old, and english speaking is important to.
New Zealand & Australia are high on our list depending if we can get visas. America is huge & we dont really know where to look there.
climate would be good but not important, near to the sea or driving distance, close to town have to think about getting old even if we dont want to.

we have been doing some searching on the net for perth & new zealand but no sure what areas would suit us, but looking at costs etc.

thanks for the ideas so far especially the states as we have no idea for there,
we donot  want to return to england that is one thing we have decided.

i hope this makes things a bit clearer. so bascially any ideas you have would be good you may live in a location or visited one you may think is good. look forward to replies thans for your time

If the US is huge, and you want the ocean, and to teach kitesurfing, how about Hawaii, or the Southern California coast,  big drawback,  expensive.  But they are both big vacation destinations, and life for many there revolves around the water.  We often vacation in Carlsbad California, a small beachy town just north of SanDiego.  I have never seen kitesurfing, but I see surfing school set up every time I go.  Loads of kids, and teens learning,  I see this sort of thing all the way down the coast into San Diego.

Susan,
My sister relocated from Toronto to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and they love it.  The were actively accepted into the community and are close to the ocean.  They are big sea kayakers.  It is more expensive now than when they first bought their land and house, but I think it's still cheaper than lots of Canada.
