It's happened again . . . another research bear has been killed by a hunter. This time it is Lily's brother Cal - and he was collared, but didn't have ribbons. He had traveled well beyond the research area and was actually killed before Sarah, but Doc Rogers/Sue didn't find out until today. How impossibly sad. RIP, Cal.
Oh Sue Ann, how incredibly sad. My stomach did a flip-flop when I saw the "Hope and Lily" heading when I came on to TT just a minute ago. I was only thinking yesterday that although poor Sarah was no longer with us, we had been lucky to escape other tragedies. I haven't been to see the Update today, it was to be my next move. I don't think I want to read it now.
It's amazing how a group of wild animals that most of us have never met, (unless you are lucky like Maria), can affect your daily life. When everything is going fine with the research team and the bears, you find yourself feeling very happy, but the slightest bad piece of news and it brings you down like a sack of potatoes.
Poor little Cal.
Marilyn.
yes, Sue Ann.......unbearably sad.........poor Cal. I'll never come to terms with killing these beautiful creatures for "sport"........and to read that two of the four DNR collared bears killed, were actually killed by 12 year old CHILDREN............utterly horrible.
And what I cannot understand is why the DNR won't support making it illegal to kill collared bears. It seems they aren't as dedicated and committed to their research animals as Lynn and Sue. So what does that say about how valid and authentic their studies are?
I was very sorry to hear this news today. We can only hope that next year the game commissioner will make it illegal to kill the collared bears. I watched the documentary last weekend "Bear Walker of the North Woods" and Cal was in it. Him and his buds that were shot that first year.
The comfort for me is knowing that the pain here is on us. The animals killed are at peace.

Did you all read this? NOT very encouraging...........
Killing these beautiful creatures for 'sport' is beyond comprehension to me. The news yesterday about Cal, a wonderful, three year old research bear, is so very sad. I think bear hunting should be banned in this country. It's a barbaric and outdated sport!!!
This is really said and heartbreaking. I just don't get it - Killing animals for "sport" - I don't think so!!!!
Why can't those "people" start with a reasonable hobby like teddybearmaking?
oh this is just so heartbreaking, how can anyone do this, let alone children for goodness sake, so so sad

I did read this, and more said about this commissioner. He is obviously misinformed about the research being done. It is social, but not social between humans and bears, but between bears and bears. I really have a feeling he does not like the Doctors and does not like being told what to do. I think they are going to have to go over his head if they want legislation to happen here. Just plain sad.

It is heartbreaking, I don't know how anyone could kill any animal
