Hi everyone!
The other day my 6 year old granddaughter was over so I got a few bears down off the shelf for her to play with.  While we were playing and I was telling her about how bears make good friends she said “but bears aren't alive! .  Well, that really got me thinking!  It's funny how adults like bears in a different way than children do.  I personally think my bears are alive (look at those eyes – how can they not be!). but not in the usual way that a person is.  The way they can comfort you and the different personalities they have shows they are so much more than just toys.  But in what way is a bear alive??? What makes them so special to us?  It would be great to hear people's ideas on this topic....

It is an intangible thing, Lizzie. I have been to many, many bear shows, as well as doll and bear shows and believe me there is a world of difference between the  "dolly" people and the arctophiles. I have seen dolls carefully wrapped in bubble wrap, plastic and then a box (not neccessarily porcelain dolls) but when it comes to bears......."Oh don't put him/her in a bag she won't be able to breathe!" So what is it I wonder? A new bear mum will happily carry her purchase like a newborn, but the dolls get wrapped and don't see the light of day until they get to their new home and then they are carefully placed into a diplay cabinet. Often the bear gets to share the bed!  bear_wub  bear_wub  bear_wub  bear_wub

Oh bears are great friends, a guaranteed perfect hug every time you get home, and they don't complain when you hog the covers in bed  bear_grin

Maybe it's the fur--like our beloved pets have fur--and definitely the hugs and cuddles. You can't hug and cuddle very many works of art.  bear_tongue

Bugs Bunny isn't real but people talk about him like he is.

Kids will shout "Elmo!" and make a fuss but they know Elmo is just a character on TV.

What's any different about Bears?

As a collector,  I have many bears and they have all "spoken" to me in one way or another.  I love the expressiveness of bears.  Unfortunately I can not afford to adopt bears straight from the artist anymore as money is tight but I have many that were gifts or rescued.
