I've just received an order from someone who had purchased from me in the past. She is now in Iraq and wants to order several large pieces. It's not a military address, it would be going to the Embassy in Iraq. Could mailing to Iraq, possibly, be safe?

Hi Karen
I would look into possibly using DHL. But look into the shipping cost and make sure they are willing to send. Post to Countries like Iraq/Iran/Cuba can sometimes be a problem. I work at a UPS store and just looked up Iraq for and it says animal skins and furs are prohibited so be careful with the materials you choose as well. That will be a blanket prohibited item not just DHL. But just a single piece of paper by DHL is $92.00 from here in Canada. The US will be a different price. Check with the customer on how the postal service is in Iraq. But general with certain countries courier is safer, but much more in cost. Investigate the different services to Iraq first. And once again watch the material used and make sure they aren't on the prohibit list. From what I can see that is the only two things that pose a problem from the list we have here at the store. But I would check into it further.
Good luck

Back in 2003/2004, I got an order for two big bears from a soldier stationed in Iraq. He, however, wanted them mailed to his mom's address here in the US so he could pick them up the next time he had a break from duty. We communicated via email for several months and I learned that his job was going ahead of the main unit to make sure their route was safe . . . no bombs, etc. I was really concerned for his safety and decided to make him a 'pocket' teddy to keep with him all the time. (Like that was going to protect him - silly me.) So I did send a bear to Iraq, but he had an APO military address and that's the way it got to him. Don't know nowadays how safe mail is going there, but seems to me that it would be safer than something sent to Afghanistan. Sorry I couldn't help.
I would check with the client over there and see what they think would be the best way to send it. My concern would be if there was any weight in the pieces that you send that might attract attention via an x ray or something. I would think something going to the embassy is going to be checked over very thoroughly .
