Hi Aggie
I have so far not commented on your post, I have been burnt alive on here before.....................the internet is just letters on a forum without a human touch, so things can get miss-read

I will be brave enough to answer your query over category 1 (as I am a nominee in that category) I myself am very glad that they changed the rules "halfway through" but I have been nominated, many of us had realised that this category has grown over time to be huge and it is a sensible decision to address this issue

Wendy please forgive me adding my bit on cat 1, I felt it was only right to do so

Hi everyone, been a few months that i haven't been on here, anyway i just wanted to add to the discussion.
i have been making bears and for a few years but i have kept my prices low making sure i cover the cost on the material and then a little something for me, certainly not the full amount of hours of work that i have put in. anyhow i belong to a craft group here in portugal and we all make different things and we all have one problem before we even start making our craft..... importing, we have to import everthing in as you cannot get anything here and if you are luckly enough to find what you need the prices are about 4 times what you would normally pay. So back to the question i would love to charge more but i have to be realastic and make my bears with the enjoyment that i get from doing it and i have to say that in the last 3 months i have sold 8 and have just finished a commission, the sales are from doing craft fairs and getting my name out with visitors here on holiday so promoting and promoting. I am surprized at how many i have sold recently and really pleased and i will continue to keep my prices the same for a good while yet and hope more of my little creations go to new homes.

hope i haven't babbled to much and i think all our work should be valued, and i think all our situations are different especially if this is your main job.... lets wish for a better 2011

bear hugs Susan x

We must be in the same boat, as I am selling more now than ever before.

Dawn...................love the idea of a campaign, its true whenever I look at my collection I just smile and it lifts my day, no matter how sad I am  bear_thumb

I think that this issue, is very much an individuals choice and its a tough one.

It does depend on your circumstances and dare I say your standing in the bear world and what you produce. If like me you are some where in the middle the issue is not so complex and having "specials" is often a way around this.

I know that some of you will disagree with me but is it not better to have a sale for the want of a £5 reduction? Please don't miss read me, I am not suggesting every one slashes their prices BUT it is a tough world out there and many bear makers are just like me, in the middle, so it really does depend on your individual circumstances

Hi Val
Many thanks for your understand and I too wouldn't want anyone to have any misconceived ideas about the fair.

In fact we in the UK are very lucky to have not one but two awards that are both judged in the fur. I will certainly be entering again next year, partly because it does make you strive in what you do and I also believe in supporting both the awards we have and also our UK magazines, we wouldn't want to loose them

Hi Val

......................um, I can honestly say that all those posted above did not intend their comments to be seen as "complaining" nor did we think that the fair was ran in a bad way............to explain from a competitors point of view.....

We plan many many weeks in advance on what we will make, then comes weeks of precision crafting, often resulting in re-sewing, stuffing etc........just to make that bear as perfect as possible. Then we wait and wait with baited breath, finally the day arrives and its so tense, I know myself that I am a cat on hot pins all day, I even clocked watched till the results time and I was 150 miles away.

We as competitors have a natural exuberance for any competition and as such are very keen to hear if anyone has heard anything as soon as possible BUT we understand that those that host these fairs are very very busy, often for days after and yes we did hear very very quickly

I myself, can only praise Brewins Bruin for their work in this competition and how it was handled.

Please excuse our over excited state
Hugs
Sue xx

I have to agree with Susan, Bearpile is fantastic.

I started off just opting for one month "to see how it went" and have never looked back................in fact I was late renewing one month and a collector emailed me to see if I was still making bears. You see the thing with Bearpile it is permanent exposure, your listings only get removed if you remove them and just because a bear doesn't sell straight away it doesn't mean that no-one wants it, a collector maybe just hoping to gain a bit of extra cash from somewhere to buy  bear_thumb
