Teddy Talk: Creating, Collecting, Connecting

Oh, what a great and wonderful surprise to receive Angellus from Lisa. A truly beautiful angel came to my rescue on this hectic and busy season - ( the whole family is here for the holidays - and shopping is still not done - decorating will have to do.) Lisa you are quite the artist. The picture just does not do justice. Settled in the Christmas tree - Angellus is now overlooking the chaos, and smiling, making us all feel a little calmer. I can't thank you enough for making this holiday brighter and merrier. Now, I am on my way to grocery shop. Ugh! Thanks again, John

I was born into The World of Teddy Bears in the 1960s------it was like growing up in Santa's Workshop !!   The "ART OF THE TEDDY BEAR" was in "full-swing" in our home and in our life !!!         I was mainly influenced----(never pushed)----by my Mom,  Beverly Matteson  Port,  who was an internationally known artist, author, researcher  and consultant.      One of my first Teddy Bears was in the UFDC magazine in 1976.     Also, I loved the antique bears----and was one of the first to research and identify them.    I started writing  "The Bear Sleuth"  column for the Teddy Bear Review Magazine  in the 1980s, and continued on to 2005 in the Teddy Today magazine.     I make many different kinds and styles of Teddy Bears----all from my own concepts and patterns.   So---- "LET'S TALK TEDDY BEARS"----and keep on doing what we enjoy !!!                                                                                        :clap:    :clap:    :clap:   :clap:    :clap:

TO BE OR NOT TO BE ???------THAT IS THE QUESTION  !!!

Being allergic to egg-based (or egg cultured) vaccines is a problem for my Mom----she had to have an interdermal   (Between the layers of the skin)   test for that egg allergy.   Bad reaction, and had to have an allergy shot just for the Test !!!  However Eating eggs does Not affect her !!!  Who can figure !!!                                    to everyone-----NO FLU ALLOWED !!!

Hello Kim-----I am in Hawaii for a visit, and my mother,  Beverly Matteson Port,  just called me.  She said to tell Evie,  that the Gingerbread Man just visited her in California,  near the Ocean and he loved                                           to watch the huge waves roll in !!!   She gave him one of her Gingerbears, that she made years ago, to keep him company on his travels !!!

Mom thanks you !!  and I thank you,  too !!    To Peterbear,  who asked about The Marquis of Bath----yes, The Marquis collected bears and his favorite teddy bear, "Clarence",  was shown in a picture during the Great Teddy Bear Rally in England, in 1981.

Gollies have been on a "comeback" for  a long time----look up "Gollyfest" on Google and learn all about it. There was a Gollyfest convention Last weekend in San Francisco---I was their auctioneer.

I WILL BE AT THE TEDDY, BEAR AND TOY SALE----AT MY SALES BOOTH----AT THE SAN      FRANCISCO MARRIOTT ON SUNDAY, SEPT, 26----TO ANSWER THOSE WHO HAVE PHONED AND EMAILED ME----I CAN  "TALK TEDDY BEARS,"  AND ABOUT MY MOM, ( BEVERLY PORT ).   I AM GIVING A MAIN PROGRAM  ABOUT BOTH  DURING THE CONVENTION,  AND HAVE AN ARTICLE   IN THE CONVENTION BOOK.   THIS IS A UNITED FEDERATION OF DOLL CLUBS EVENT----THEY HAVE HUNDREDS OF    CLUBS, INTERNATIONALLY----AND THOUSANDS OF MEMBERS !!!!  THIS IS ONE      OF THE PLACES SHE GAVE A PROGRAM IN 1976, AND ALSO HAD AN ARTICLE IN THE CONVENTION BOOK, TOO----33 YEARS AGO !!!!   SHE WAS ALSO  "GUEST EDITOR"  FOR THEIR INTERNATIONAL "DOLL NEWS MAGAZINE" IN 1976---"TEDDY BEARS" WAS THE THEME.  AND THEODORE B. BEAR,  PETER BULL'S FRIEND,  WAS ONE OF THE WRITERS FOR IT.

A big Thank You to Sue Ann----and everyone who has posted !!!    Yes, my Mom actually began the "Art of The Teddy Bear" in the 1950s to 1960s----alone in calling them "art" at that time.  She was given a book about Peter Bull,  for Christmas 1969,  with the comment:  "Here is someone like you, who is 'CRAZY' about  teddy bears!"    She started writing about them in the 1970s,  for National and International  magazines, Convention books and Slide programs.  When interviewed, she termed herself a "Teddy Bear Artist"---after all she was an artist.   A multi-media artist:  drawing, painting, sculpting, fashion and fabric design, etc., since college----and an International "doll artist."          :hug:  :hug:  :hug:       from Mom-----and me !!!        JOHN
