Great question!
I call my creations soft sculpture firstly because I usually make other animals instead of bears so I needed to find a term to use because it is really hard to call a puppy or cat a Teddy bear. For the most part they are made the same as Teddy bears, as in from a pattern, cut out sewn out of fabric and stuffed with stuffing, but aren't a teddy bear because they are usually a different animal other than a bear.
Secondly in the art sense I use the term soft sculpture because that is what they are, they are a piece of sculpted art to display like you would a sculpted figure from clay, wood, bronze, porcelain etc., just that my medium for sculpting is fabric and stuffing instead of clay or something else traditional for sculpting.
The cool thing with soft sculpture over hard sculpture is that when you get tired of one pose you have it displayed in you can change the pose any time you want bear_original
Does that help?

thank you guys!
The only thing sculpted on him is the muzzle area, the rest of his face is soft sculptured. The apoxie is sticky to work with and takes a getting used to period but once you get the hang of it it is great to work with. Using water to blend with also helps a lot.

I think there are still lots of awesome traditional bear artists out there. For me i guess it it artist preference because I like to create realism, and try to push each time to get that life like look, so that is where my creations go. The collectors that follow my work like the realism too. The more realistic the more they like it. As far as it being like taxidermy that is like comparing apples and oranges.
I am glad that there has been so much evolution, if we all created the same thing or all collectors like the same thing I think it would be very boring. Like they say different strikes for different folks.

Thank you! Great to see so many of you again. Thanks for checking out my Blog too.

Donna, I'm not sure about anymore patterns just yet, if so thy will have to be my older designs, the problem being that all my newer creations have lots of freehand parts so no actual pattern pieces available to make the completed creation.

Spike-tt.jpgHi Everyone, here is my second sculpted face bear Spike. He has a muzzle sculpted out of Apoxy Sculpt and then I have applied the same mohair he is made out of over top of the Apoxy one hair at a time. Spike is 10" and is listed on eBay for three days.
You can also see my first Polymer Clay Miniature by seeing my other items.
Hope you can pay them a visit if you get a chance.

Hi everyone, wow lots of new names! Great to see all the new people here.
I had to leave TT a few months ago for personal reasons (hence the new account), but have decided to open up another account and get back on here to keep up with everyone.
I have a hard time keeping up on all the social networking and getting work done too being a full time artist, so I have decided to just keep up with a couple forums and my blog, I have tried FB but it is too difficult to make my way through in a timely manner and still get work done, so I apologize to anyone who may have sent me a friend request that I haven't accepted yet.
I am still working like mad on my soft sculpture animals but have also started working in clay making miniature animals and some art dolls.
Anywhoo I am happy to be back and look forward to getting caught up with everyone and getting to know the new people as well...I feel like a newbie all over again!

Big hugs
Krista
